Show U S EXPORTS no greater tribute to the faithfulness and efficiency of the american workman and american manufacturer could be found in a condensed space than the records of the bureau ot of statistics department of commerce and labor which shown show the exhortations exportations of what may properly be termed high grade manufactures from the united states people in all parts of the world are purchasing every month and practically every day of the year the most complex products of the american workshop such as typewriters sewing machines cash registers scientific instruments st telegraph and telephone apparatus musical instruments automobiles and other articles requiring superior skill in their manufacture articles of this class are transported to the most distant and out of the way places in the world the islands of the ocean and the distant interiors of the great continents with the calm confidence that they will not only render the service tor for which they were manufactured but continue that service for such length of time as is to justify their transfer from the place of manufacture to distant communities not provided with experts and facilities for repairs that this confidence in the products of the american workshop Is justified by experience is indicated by the continued and in most cases growing export trade in these articles taking sewing machines as an example A hundred million dollars worth of these machines have been exported from the united states in the last quarter of a century going to every ery pait of the world orld in the single year 1909 for example the countries colonies and aad islands to which sewing machines were sent included madagascar belgian kongo the canary islands french oceania asiatic russia aden hongtong Hong kong dutch east indies paraguay peru dutch guiana haiti santo domingo dutch west indies egypt turkey in asia and europe siam korea and liberia typewriters are another example of complicated machines exported to distant parts of the world v orld with confidence that they can there be successfully operated without return to the manufacturer fac for frequent repair the value of typewriters exported from the united states since the fiscal year 1897 when they were first shown in the statement of exports of the bureau of statistics of the department of bomm c labor laboris is over GO wil lion lioa dollars and in 1909 they went to no less than 90 different countries colonies and islands including greenland at the far north new zealand it at the far south morocco in ill north africa slam in the extreme orient ecuador and bolivia in south america the aceres and madeira islands in the atlantic dutch east indies ard and french osceaola Osce ania in tho the pacific bulgaria servia and romenia in curole and persia the straits settlements aud ill rrt AO rea in asia cash registers are a still more recently developed item in our list of ex yet they were sent in 1909 to more than 50 different countries including nearly a score in europe practically all parts parle of north and south america new zealand and philippine islands in ill the he pacific and to various varlo uj sections ot of africa the automobile which seems to require careful and expert attention even in the country in which manufactured goes in large numbers to all the grand divisions and many of the principal colonies and islands of the world the 1909 figures show exports of automobiles to 17 different countries of europe to practically all of the countries and larger islands of north america to every country of south america to china india straits settlements tle ments dutch east indies hongtong Hong kong japan asiatic russia and slam in asia and to egypt portuguese africa canary islands french africa and brit ish east south africa in that dirand grand division the valuation of this class ct 0 exports having haing rapidly increased until the figures of the calendar year 1910 alone show a total of 11 million dollars musical instruments of american manufacture including organs pian os 03 and plan pi anolas ofas are arc evidently popular the countries to which pianos and organs are sent being approximately 75 nod and even of planolas pi pl anolas the exports are numbered by thousands and the countries to which they go approximately hall hali a hundred including china japan slam new zealand the west indian dian islands the countries ot of central and south america and a dozen or more of 0 the countries of europe thus one might go on indefinitely indefinite enumerating the products ot of the american workshop or high quality and complex character each as electrical appliances phonographs metalwork metal work ing machinery shoe machinery woodworking w machinery dental goods photographic to goods mowers and reapers readers and many other articles ot of this class forming a very considerable percentage of the million dollars worth of manufactures exported from thel the united states last year I 1 |
