Show r g Silk KecreattikMi gfikunr :: Morning, October 30, 1980 As Utahs Weather Turns Colder Fishing Gets Hotter 9 By Tom Wharton Tribune Outdoors Writer STRAWBERRY RESERVOIR The wind howled across the Strawberry, raising vicious-lookinwhitecaps. The cold breeze knifed through the fishermans body, and no amount of winter clothing could blunt its effect. Not a boat could be seen all across the huge reservoir. It was the kind of weather that separated the fishermen from the boys. Web Adams surveyed the scene and shook his head. He looked at his bass boat, covered with salt which had been used to clear snow from the Daniels Canyon Road. And he looked at the whitecaps in the bay. Should We Try It? I dont Should we try it? he asked a friend know if we can get the boat back on the trailer, but I guess well give it a go. So, he put on his gloves, his parka, his ski cap, his heavy boots and his thick winter pants. He carefully prepared his graphite rod and checked his boat carefully. It could be a long afternoon. The whitecaps threw Web from side to side, bashing his boat around and throwing water into his eyes. Black clouds rolled across the skies. A wilder ride couldnt be found in Cataract Canyon. The fishing would be slow on this late fall g 'V i V ; ; V I J ik I ' 4 It his hands are too cold to hold a lure, Web Adams can still stay prepared. In order to fish at Strawberry in late November, Web Adams wears heavy cloth afternoon The unsuccessful casts of flies, plugs and spinners would be as numerous as the litter on the shoreline, the result of hundreds of anglers afternoons at Strawberry under the hot summer sun. The folks who enjoyed a cold beer on those August evenings have long departed to their warm homes in the city. Their fishing rods have been put away for another season. Theyve left the November fishing to Adams and a few diehards. On this day, there is a man fishing from an innertube at the East Portal. There is a lonely angler trolling in a rubber raft. There are three anglers on the bank, huddled around a fire. And there is a man bait fishing, who casts his bait into the w ater and then retreats into the warmth of his van where he can watch his fishing rod. Adams will only catch one three-pouncutthroat as he battles the cold, the wind and tiie waves. His companions will settle for a few small rainbows, one nice one and another pretty cutthroat. And the group will fish for almost five hours. But Web knows that, when the wind dies down and the lake becomes calm, in the frigid evening twilight of late November, that the fishmg at Strawberry, Deer Creek, Panguitch Lake, Fish Lake, Scofield and most rivers gets hot, hot enough to draw anglers willing to battle the elements for one last memorable trip. Nine Casts, Nine Fish 1 fish in nine casts in this same spot nine caught once last season, says Web as he changes lures. When its calm, you can really knock them dead. Adams and his Salt Lake fishing buddies have waded through knee-dee- p snow, fished in freezing fog and have waded into icy water in order to catch the lunkers that bite in the last days of the regular season. For this is when the fishing is often the hottest. "This is the best fishing of the year, says Alan Abildskov of Salt Lake as he trolls in his rubber raft But I dont come up that often." Trolling is good this time of year but allowing your boat to quietly drift with the waves while you cast a fly or a lure is even better. Those who fish their big streamers fairly deep or cast their spinners from a boat toward the shoreline will be rewarded with fish big fish on most November afternoons. These fish wont come easily. Launching a boat is difficult. Keeping your rod tip free of ice is even harder. And keeping your hands warm while you cast is impossible. Still, there is an element of adventure to all of this, the adventure that comes with being the only boat on Strawberry, where hundreds of boats can be seen nearly every weekend of the summer. d '; , v ' A' ' 'VV a Anglers like Web Adams know like this one makes braving that catching nice cutthroats, the cold weather worth work. ing, gloves and boots.
