Ctanluy (The Shining) Ciiaiuo, Geoige (Siar Wu s v Lucas and Steven (Jaws) Spielberg are auteurs by definition. They have total control of their movies . contents. ' . These directors are solely responsible for their films from beginning to end. To a man, they are big spenders. Their films cost upwards of $10 million 1 each. Theirs is the first and final say-sStudios and other backers have placed as much as v ' $35 million in their hands and prayed to God the ' auteurs genius would be reflected at the box office. I The catch is that the financiers must keep hands ) off. Studio executives are not even allowed to see i, their footage until the final cut is completed and then, more often than not, the sacrosanct film cannot be touched. .V Backers Acquiesce If an auteurs budget is $10 million and halfway 'through the picture he says its going to cost $20 million, the backers acquiesce. What else can they ' do? Pull the plug on the $10 million already invested? Bring in a Should costs keep rising, the backers hang in there ; to protect their investment. Ciminos Heavens Gate, yet to be released, is an example. So is was an enormous bomb, Spielbergs 1941 i Coppolas Apocalypse Now still is a financial question mark. Woody Allen is an auteur. His budgets are e track record is unblemished smaller. His with the exception of "Interiors, his only attempt at ; pure drama. , 1 ' non-auteu- box-offic- Paul Mazursky is yet another auteur. He is reluctant to admit it. Mazursky s films are indelibly stamped with his intimate touch, stories of contemporary American lifestyles which boldly examine the values of our times. His only movies are An Unmarried Woman, I Love You, Alice B. Toklas, Blumq In Love," Bob & Carol and Ted & Alice," Harry and Tonto" and Alix In Wonderland. Special Films Each is a very special film, each is just a shade g and challengingly different from other movies whether made by auteurs or in collaborativeefforts. Willie and Phil, is Mazurskys new movie, altogether representative of his work. It is a probing, one Jewish, the funny, painful study of two friends who fall in love with the same young other Italian woman in New York. In the course of the film the girl Margot Kidder marries one of the young men and has his child before falling in love with his best friend and becoming his mistress. Michael Okean plays the husband, Ray Sharkey the lover. actor who Mazursky, a stocky, Brooklyn-borcontinues to perform in his own films and for other directors, dislikes being identified as an auteur. Auteur is a word invented by critics to make distinctions among directors, Mazursky said. My closest director friend, Federico Fellini, is called an auteur. We never discuss movies or the auteur thing. What it does mean is that the director has a great ' deal of power with a film. I do. Arid I think of myself as a benevolent dictator on the set. But In the end every movie is a collaborative effort. How could I get along or any other director r, thought-provokin- Wn the input of his actors and his cinematographer, like Seen Nykvist who did such a beautiful job photographing 'Willie and Phil? Lack of Objectivity rule on a movie, Theres a danger in one-ma-n he agreed. The main problem is lack of objectivity and the tendency for a director to surround himself with And, of course, the plague of budget overrun.
