Show A CURIOUS RELIC ABOUT three or four months ago agoa agoa agoa a remarkable coin medal or memorial memorial memorial ial of some sort was discovered in ia Logan a description of has not we believe yet been heen published In July or August of this year Mr Victor Crockett was plowing up a portion of ff his city lot situated in inthe inthe inthe the Second Ward of Logan when he noticed a peculiar object brought to view by the plowshare which attracted his further attention He picked it up and on further examination examination examination found it had the ap appearance of a corroded coin Mr Crockett handed the article to his wife t tJ be cleaned but after she had spent some hours in the attempt to do so ao using salt vinegar polish etc it became necessary to try a stronger agent and nitric acid was used When thoroughly cleaned the object was found to be bea bea bea a coin ooin or medal about the size of a silver sUver dollar and ant about half as thick On one side it was thickly covered with hieroglyphics en- en engraved engraved en engraved graved with great skill On the theother theother theother other side was a row of hieroglyphics around the outer edge of the circle within which was an seeing All All Eye and a spray of roses contain contain- containIng containing containing ing three or four flowers In the centre of one of the roses es was a human face but so 80 sma small as to be discerned with difficulty by the naked eye The hieroglyphics the seeing All All Eye the flowers and especially the human face were engraved with a 1 J skill beauty and nicety arely equalled in modern times A local jeweller declared that the work was done by hand and that the human face its diminutive size considered could not be reproduced by the themo mo most t skillful engravers of the pr present nt day A small piece of the coin or medal was chipped off and assayed when it was found to consist of 60 percent per cent gold and ami 40 per cent copper It was extremely hard and local experts expressed the opinion that the cop cop- copper copper cop copper per was of a more refined character than any known to modern modem com com- commerce commerce commerce merce and had been subjected to a hardening process not understood now The rhe relic when dropped upon a hard surface emits a sharp clear ringing sound Bound Und The piece of ground in which this curious object abject was discovered had lain till then in its primeval condition never having been plowed nor otherwise otherwise dis- dis disturbed dis disturbed by the implements of hus hus- husbandry husbandry husbandry bandry since the present settlement was made The gentleman who found it it and who is a believer in the divine au- au authenticity authenticity au authenticity of the Book of Mormon be became convinced that he had dis dis- discovered discovered discovered covered a relic of ancient N oi civilization and in order to test this theory he and some friends who became interested compared the characters upon the coin or mt medal dal with the hieroglyphics contained in inElder inElder inElder Elder George Reynolds Reynold's s work en- en entitled entitled en entitled titled The fhe Story of the Rook of Mormon and also with the fat fac fac simile of some metal plates discovered in an ancient mound in the United States States which is given in the volume entitled O 0 Prates Pratts Works The result was that fifteen different characters found upon the coin or medal were also found in Elder Reynolds book or on the plates reproduced in Elder Pratts Pratt's works From the number of characters which appear on the relic it is sur- sur surmised surmised sur surmised that considerable information would be obtained by a correct trans trans- translation translation translation lation of them and we understand that attempts will be made to have havea a translation given at some of the eastern seats of this kind of learning It is surmised that the reli e may be beI bea bea I a apiece piece of money but the fineness of the workmanship upon it the su- su superior superior su superior hand-engraving hand which it dis- dis displays displays dis displays plays and especially the profuse of hieroglyphics which it bears make it improbable that it was used as a circulating commercial medium More probably it was de- de designed designed de designed signed as a memorial of some kind The presence pre nce of the All All- seeing All Eye upon the relic indicates that it was made by a people who had bad some knowledge of an Omni Omniscient Deity and aad tends to prove that in ancient times there dwelt in America a people who believed in the true God Thus this little relic di discovered discovered ered by accident bears bean evidence confirmatory of the Book of Mor Mor- Mormon mono mon This can be said without a I translation of the hieroglyphics but if this could be had doubtless the evidence in support of that record would be much more striking and explicit |
