Show LIVERY STABLE BURNED A few minutes after 1 am sept 4 the fire bells rang out a wild alarm and the brigade with hose cart carf engine etc hurried to the scene of the fire the old city market building on west temple street a few rods north of first south street the blaze had bad apparently patently ly just started when the alarm was turned in but in scarce more than a minute the entire structure seemed wrapped in flames the whole building was dry as tinder and the fire fairly leaped along the wooden walls and through the loft half filled with hay at first the flames were discovered in the office near the west end of the building but before anything could be done to check them the roof wa waa 4 caught and the fire beyond control so far as the building was concerned the place has been occupied by mr eph knowlton as a livery stable and last night there were 29 horses one cow and 21 vehicles in the bull ling the few men la in the vicinity when the fire started gave assistance in the effort to remove the animals but only eight horses could be taken to the outside james morris au employed emp loye was awakened by the noise and began unta unfastening fastening un the horse one of them in its terror knocked him down and he was caught in tho the fire and narrowly escaped being burned to death As it is his back and head are scorched his left foot burned slightly and his right foot badly his injuries are not dangerous but are very painful and will lay him upeor some time the frightened horses were un controllable contro lable and more could have been saved but for this fact two fine animals were brought as far as the door but seeing the crowd outside they turned again into the building phe struggles and screams of the score of animals as the fire reached them was indeed pitiful but did not last more chan about fifteen minutes before they were silenced in death none of the vehicles were removed in fact in about two nil minutes from the first discovery of the fire the heat was so intense that it was not possible to get into the building at first there appeared great danger of the flames spreading but the streams from the steamer and hydrants were so well manipulated by the firemen that in a short time it was evident that the fire would be confined to the building fires were started among rubbish in several places in the block west one was also discovered at the back of grant brothers stables and another at sells bells lumber yard near a haystack in a yard a block west clothing that was banging on a line took fire as did also some carpeting on the ground these had all been started by flying sparks but the people having been aroused the incipient cl ahe ent blazes were extinguished 1 the flames from the building shot upward nearly a hundred feet and illuminated the streets for fora a long distance the place was completely destroyed but a few charred posts and boards remain standing toward the east end were the roasted bodies of the animals that had bad perished several persons were camping in the yard and lost bedding clothing etc one man had laid his coat in the building and it was burned with it he mourns the loss of a little over in cash which was in one pocket the losses will foot up to fully af this falls on mr knowlton whose finances are not in a condition to easily bear the depletion ion eleven horses one cow and seven vehicles with other property belonging to him were burned the building was owned by mrs A C dunbar and mrs J E caine like the rest of the property there it was uninsured it was to have been torn down shortly so that the loss is only the rent it would bring to the end of the lease which was 1500 fourteen vehicles and ten teli horses belonged to outside parties the losers of these are james hilton mr griffiths mr clawson thos C M morris ra 8 R marks co opera tive tl C A ya company W L price henry james mes joseph daynes and S F brown mr brown who has recently leased beeks hot springs lost tw two good horses he had j just purchased them from mr beek beck and the loss falls heavily on him as he is not a man of means mr james lost a fine fl ne mare w which h I 1 eh with the buggy was worth not less than the hor horse seand and wagon belonging to the coop co op wagon company wan worth and all the others range from up making a total of 2500 lost by those who stabled animals there in the morning hundreds of people visited the scene of the fire and walked about the charred ruins As the day became warmer a stench began to arise from the bodies of the dead animals and under the direction of mr phillips they were being removed no cause of the fire has yee yec been definitely settled upon nor does doea it seem likely that one will te be it is not probable that it Is the work of the incendiary mr knowlton and the others who could ill III affolt to stand the loss have the sympathy of many friends in their misfortune |
