Show OVER OUR INLAND SEA we were forty in number ladies and gentlemen gentet men exclusive of tn cat tain and sailors and as load after datar load of us arrived at the p pier i er below bellow V farmington our hilarity increased A short distance out ou our sc V gr r lay at anchor on the gen gently I 1 heaving va bosom of the lake on the wharf harf was life and activity some wm weye in animated groups talking expect antly of the voyage others were running to and fro with bud bundles leh and still others were dancing the provision wagon made its appearance and while it was being run down the pier a rotten plank gave way letting one wheel through which needless to say sent soiree some things on the fly one large lunch box turned a complete somersault from the top of the wagon and amid the shriek of pies from the ladles ladies who owned it lit on its babe all right due I 1 suppose to the thelast faba that someone had with much fafe thought written on top this side up with care 21 not a few dishes were broketa brok efi eia but the food was all right the schooner now gracefully sall sail and made for the pier the holds were filled with picnic pic nic and bedding and we were planked blanked plan ked across was rather an exiting proceeding the planks having a decided downward slope the attraction of the deck was 60 so great for some home that they increased their speed in to afie near nearness nees they attained and were plumped rather precipitately over cover i the deck rail nothing daunted bausted they picked themselves up to take their turn in laughing at those who wiio followed I 1 I 1 we were all aboard now but could not proceed as a favorable breeze for sailing had not set in the sun was low and we were hungry so to pass the intervening time we made a raid on the proviso ns satisfied ou ourselves and nd awe ie about to get impatient about starting when the sun slin sank an and d an accommodating accommodate lag land areiza sprang up and drove us forth the assel vessel had barely got in motion nonae interesting young lady that she was sea mck but it proved I 1 a false alarm 7 we made madbear r church island but as the wind was rather high we did not reach there until 3 tire the next morning the night had r passed w red very quickly and pleasantly cough th as the hours were beguiled with yarn spinning and singing to ahe breezy music of guitars about 12 the moon rose and the field glasses and captains captain glass came into requisition by which the craters plains and valleys of the moon were plainly visible jupiter received his share of attention too and did credit to himself by displaying three of his satellites el I 1 landing on the largest island of the lake we slept till sunrise we then started off for stansbury island but not before we had taken li a morning dip in id the lake ineize in size stansbury ranks next to church island and is to the west ad south of the latter we had fair sailing and had bad about forgotten the word seasick sea sick when we founded bounded the so southern southerla pointon point of the island we were leaving and were struck aruck by a sudden squall in the excitement that ensued a young fudy fady fainted but an admirer was conveniently near and he persuaded her to revive we were clipping through the water at a lively rate jacow etow but as the vessel did not roll much hardly yet did we we realize the meaning of sea pretty soon however the squall passed on cn and left in its wake a rolling sea and a lively compre hention of the word began to mani test fest itself the observer might have seen dif different Terent persons stealing gentry and unobtrusively but hastily away to the deck rail they had iad not mot the inclination to gather in groups as aa was their wont before but seemed to prefer seclusion A bleaching process process commencing around a dolefully drooping mouth and quickly extending over the whole hole face was the first outward ign of rebellion within and though some did their best beat to quell the uprising they were at last obliged to open their mouths and permit ermit it ina in a few hours convalescence les les cence set in and we were as livery lively as ever except now and then when the schooner swayed a little the former victims would engage in sober reflections toward evening the air began to get so calm that the captain was afraid we would be unable to reach stansbury ansbury Bt and such proved the case at 10 we lay becalmed a mile or two off land under a sultry sky with black lowering clouds that looked like rain anchor was cast and preparations made for sleep each one had made his bis pun or told his funny yarn the laughter had bad subsided and MorD heus was about to 40 claim her own when from the hold of the vessel where the gentle men had bad been consigned to eleen came two deep doleful voices singing in hard beds hard bard beds come 4 again no more of course that set us all laughing finally get to sleep however when a gentle pitter patter accompanied by a sensation of wetness awakened all the rain lasted but a few nal minutes though the only disagreeable result being a few stiff necks next day when morning came there was a breeze but it was cofay favorable for the island but as the majority on board wished to obtain specimens of fossil and of coral formation with wb which ach one part of the island abounds it was decided to reach land by tacking 11 instead of going horae home as the wind seemed determined we should the water being shoal along the part of the island we approached pro ached the skiff belonging to the schooner had to be used to take us ashore landing we went in various direct directions ious specimen hunting bunting the agreed signal to call us back being a pistol shot after the lapse of some two hours bours the shot was hearland hear dand we gathered together to compare our dif different faient finds some borne valuable specimens of fossil and coral had been gathered another specimen though dotso not so valuable more lute interesting resting to some a very rutty ruay wild eat cat trap to which still clung some hairs another interesting ter te esting resting find was a closed hive in a deep cranny of the summit of a rocky ridge within the tube was waa a paper covered with the nam names of an exploring party of 1879 of course we added our names under the head excursion aboard the argo august 8 1890 11 1 1 we now counted noses and found that two of our party were missing hearing a faint hallba ha lloa 11 we looked to tho the top of the mountain of which the island consists and saw two diminutive forms by much beckoning they were made to understand that they were wanted they were down in no time as one who ha has tried descending the steep side of a mountain will understand half an hour houri later ater we were under full sail for church island again but as there was a stiff wind with tossing waves the seasick sea sick scenes of the lay day before were re enacted with diw the difre difference rence of more victims tuis this time two sisters were particularly noticeable as they had been loud in their acclamations of delight at each new victim of the y before now it was their turn and though they got near the cabin and each held a 4 shawl out to protect the other froni from the gaze of jesters their groans could be heard beard and they were pal paid in their own coin i it was amusing to stand on the cabin deck and look along the vessel those afflicted including all but a favored few were lying yin about in various positions ions of de deject je ll 11 c tion until one started for the dec deck fol rail which was a general signal for the rest to do the same 1 to one not aba busily engaged lak with himself the scene of the lake and its surroundings surrounding 8 was beautiful comprising as it did all the shaded of blue imaginable first the aber was the deep blue of the rollin rolling waves made darker by contrast to the crest of foam they carried then to the west loomed island lid which was not so faraway far away but 14 it most ledges looked a blue black and its less lees ob parts a bluer black three othel othe shades of blue lighter themselves in the moun 0 the western coast of the lake and freemont island and th tue promontory to the north tp the south lay tooele thoele county presenting to the lake a semicircular semi circular valley valby each succeeding mountain of which appeared a lighter blue than its predecessor de cessor northwest was church island with the individual blue of its distance and east the coast and mountains with their respective tints roofing all was the blue sky so that one might call the whole a i blue picture but certainly not the sort to give one the blues well we were near the southern end of church island but could get no near nearer erIas as this land cut off the breeze that had carried us that far so we again anchored to await a change As the change did not come very readily two ladies and a gentleman determined to go ashore albore in the skiff which had bad been made use of during our whole trip when the lake was calm enough it was a good mile and a half and those in the skis skiff had gone perhaps half way when when they noticed the schooner moving fora for shore bore too she had bad taken advantage of the whisper of a breeze that had bad come and of course that was the signal for a race lending their wel assistance stance to the breeze there were several poling with all their might but it availed nothing as the skiff kept the lead bails were drawn down and we anchored to await the following follo follow ilig morning it was yet early and we had bad plenty of time for exploring and picking up very pretty round stones that were speckled and striped we also had bad time for bathing that night most of us decided to sleep aboard the vessel but a few more adventurous went ashare to rest amid the sagebrush there so very much sleeping done by some thou though gli as th they ey made alade a rousting rousing bonfire by the light of which they got so deeply interested in a game of cards that they could hardly believe their senses when they saw the moon looking up watch watchfully fulli it at them over the eastern mountains next morning we all gp got t aboard and were waiting as usual for wind to nil fill the sail fall taking advantage of this some were off in the skiff kur and three young I 1 ou a g ladies who decided to tale take a bath appeared on deck in their bathing spite when up came the per verse breeze anji and disarranged their air plans they retreated sheepishly to the cabin to redress as the schooner a started barted on at a lively pace but she had bad to tack about to get the skiff load then we had a merry voyage home arriving at the western shore at 5 in the afternoon all voted that it was the post solid enjoyment they bad ever had at a stretch in all their lives H 11 N B we encountered one or or tivo gnats on the voyage SALT LAKE CITY august 11 |
