Show TOO transparent THE following which was intro deuced in the city council on tuesday augusts august 5 should go 0 o ing down the ages as a piece apiece of th most transparent trickery e yer ever sought to be perpetrated upon a discriminating and intelligent people SALT LAKE CITY aug 1890 to to lackany the Hon mayor and city council of sau lak city gentlemen we the undersigner undersigned under signed citizens of salt lake city respect respectfully tilly petition your honorable body to insert a clause in the contracts of agreement tn hi the joint city and county building that said building shall be erected baj by union men only V and salt lake wor work for salt lake jor workmen kmen your petition ers era will ever pray the leading signer of this alleged petition was 0 W powers the michigan trickster and chief lib eral 1 1 political boss boas of utah it was written in a scrawling hand on a single pingle sheet of paper originally apart I 1 yom from these on which the signa i tares were written the latter were on a number of sheets bearing evidence of having been separately circulated the whole were fastened together with a paper tag it was evident that the genius to whom the work of I 1 manipulating the unique petition bad been entrusted had failed to get it completed in time to nave have it go through the council a week ago last tuesday this failure caused it to be useless for the purpose for which it was designed to influence the vote of the working men man at the election of last monday co consequently ne it w was as like 1 I a I 1 last as t years bir denest it is appropriate to ask whether or not it would even if it had not been an afterbirth after birth have had the effect which powers intended it to produce we are of opinion that the result would have been the opposite of the one he deb desired ired for the reason that tha t those who take the working i men man to be an aggregation of fools I 1 are bound to find out their mistake the alleged petition was formulated on the basis that the workers fire are unable to detect between substance and shadow reality and sham this dan can be readily see seen neven even by a cursory examination of the document aside from a close analysis of it the precious paper asks the municipal corporation of salt lake city through its business agents the common council to enter into a boycott connected with the erection of a public building those who made such an asinine proposition are either lacking in the rudiments of common sense or are purposely asking the injection of an ingredient into a contract that would necessarily invalidate it it would be so held by a court of equity acting under the rules of that procedure 6 petition also asks for a viola tiong conof of the prominently declared of powers and his party the letting of contracts for public work to the lowest responsible bidder 11 this attempt to throw dust dust la in the eyes of the union workingmen is contemptible and it is difficult to understand how the latter can view it in any other light than that of an insult this attempt to offset the failure to fulfil fulfill libecap Libe raP raiv promises of salt lake work for salt lake workmen is diluted weakness the petition itself admits it by omission nothing is said against the flagrant violations bythe by the liberal council of the rosy promises to salt lake workmen made by the party before the february municipal election hence the petition says by its silence on that subject the street sprinkling may continue to be done by omaha people the pipes hydrants and other materials used by the city may continue to be imported in place of being manufactured at home because this course tp i profitable to the manipulators but in order to cover the track oj of broken promises we will ask that an impracticable condition be injected into the contracts connected with the erection of one particular building p if the workingmen of salt laa lake are susceptible of being caught by such flimsy subterfuges we nave have rated their intelligence and penetration too high but we think we have tot sot been mist ken the petition petit iop ip also puts the council in ina a id bad light as by it they also are relegated to the role ot of the senseless useless se even if what the salt lalk lafee tribune asserted when it said the fact is there are some bad men in the council le true aliey are surely not prepared to make themselves notorious throughout ou t the cou country by do doing ng corneth something i ng that probably hasneuer has never yet even been suggested to any public corporation po ration in the land neither do we believe that powers and his fellow petitioners petition ers had the remotest idea that those in trusted with the transaction of the public business of this city would enable them to I 1 ever pray by attempting 0 to grant what they asked 1 the record of the L liberal I party thus far in this city regarding salt lake work for salt like lake workmen has proved to be a will ol 01 0 the wisp and the di disingenuous Ingenuous petition em bodied in this article only serves to further illustrate the character of their hollow pretenses in that line hue the mass of salt lake workmen are not the consummate ignoramus see sea they are evidently estimated to be by acy powers and his co and let iet us continue to believe that the common council will not overstep 1 the line which divides mental equilibrium from insanity |
