the Fair and throughout the city on account of the day being set apart as Manufacturers day The woolen mills milia shoe soap soaD cracker and broom factories and a large num num- number number ber of other home manufacturing ex- ex exhibits hibits each had bad creditable exhibits This afternoon a parade formed in front of 01 Grant Bros stables stable on OD West Temple street which was decidedly novel in character and the means of stirring up much interest t It consisted or of along a long line of vehicles bearing the proprietors proprietor of home bome manufacturing in- in institutions in institutions and their employee to the number Dumber of ot about persons The column was s headed beaded by the great Raymond coach which was wal followed by bJ the drag Utah which in turn was followed by a line lIoe of busses buslee etc The fhe boys and men meD riding in the vehicles had bad been liberally supplied with tin tinhorns tinhorns horns borns and aad the DOl noise e they made as the procession passed through the principal principal pal streets to the Fair was wal something surprising The parade was a great success The balloon ascension Fair grounds yesterday afternoon was a pronounced a success A great bight was reached and the immense crowd was much pleased By the way this scheme was a home bome enterprise The balloon was made here here and Logan Paul Pau of ot Provo was waa the business man manager ager of the affair The name Dame of the m was waa B E Harris The cannon belonging to Battery A I ot of the be Utah National Guards Guarde are placed in the rear and aDd to the south of the building They include two Gat Gal Galling Gatling ling guns which are a source of ot much interest to great crowds crowde of Fair visitors An officer of ot the battery was in attend attend- attendance attendance ance part of the day and aDd explained to spectators the operation of these guns There has bas been talk of firing ring from I one of them a quantity of ot blank these theBe groups groupe became throngs and aid before noon the main building was wals crowded 16 to every part with children The city schools suspended for the day and in many instances teachers accompanied their classes es to the Fair in a body The small admission fee of ot ten cents was charged the chil chil- children children children dren in the forenoon and by 12 o'clock fully tu Uy five ve thousand of them had bad paid it At about noon at a meeting of the Fair directors it was decided as al Herman Bamberger ex- ex ex pressed it to up the children in the city and bring them bem to the tae Fair without montY money and without price In pursuance of or this decision decisions the school children ot of the city who hadnot had bad hadnot not visited the Fair in the forenoon I came in company and the Rich Rich- Richmond men mond Dairy company There is II close rivalry among these three competitors for or the highest highet award for tor cheese A still larger number of ot competitors strive for tor the highest award for butter which was given to the Charleston Creamery company It is a high honor to capture this prize I In the face of at the sharp competition for forit have ever been seen in this Territory than are now on exhibition This applies to horses borses cattle sheep swine and poultry At 1 o'clock this afternoon the Judges viewed the competitors for or the prizes for English shire stallions Four horses borse were in c One was a chestnut entered by Sam Sam- Samuel Samuel Samuel uel Parish of Centerville another was wasa wasa wasa a brown entered by Sm Smith Smith th Bros Broe ot of Cache county another black entered by Reed Heed Smoot of Provo another was wasa wasa wasa a sorrel entered by George M Carter of this city The first named took the first prizes 1 and the second named re- re received received re received the second prize All AU four of these animal were very line oe ones and the two who took prizes were superb in tn form lorca color and aDd action besides besides being of at great siz All these a animals would have been very valuable valuable valuable able a few years ago aKa Some feeling was developed over the decision of ot the Judges and they had some lame difficulty In coming to a conclusion J Just preceding the above contest were two others others- one for the Clydes Clydes- Clydesdale Clydesdale dale daJe prize in which there were three sand the other for the prize in which there were several entries Only two Clydesdale horses were shown and the first prize 15 was given to BenJ B Harmon The same exhibitor received a gold medal for or the best Clydesdale et stallion anti get W P Bowen the noted bores breeder of Spanish h Fork shows two ma magnificent stallions ns and a amare amare amare mare of the same breed given for lack of space Commencing at two o'clock this afternoon a lively contest for tor prizes took place between roadsters at Liber Liber- Liberty ty park As a whole the display of horses was large and aDd good and embraced some magnificent specimens of various breeds White Sons show several head of enormously fat tat cattle including the Sh Shorthorn and Polled Angus breeds they also exhibit a splendid Shorthorn bull and several fine cows of the same breed The animals shown bown in this ex- ex exhibit ex exhibit hibit are highly creditable John B R Winder who ba has bas long been beena a noted breeder of ot Jersey cattle shows a fine collection of ot specimens of this breed One is a magnificent bull buU and others are cows which nave haves great records as a butter makers maker There were nine head of Jersey cattle in this his ex exhibit hibit and eight of 01 them received first prizes There were also allo three head 0 of in Mr Winders Winder's exhibit exhibit two wo cows and anda
