Show OBITUARY NOTES ALEXANDER STEPHENS SALT LAKE laike CITY sept 19 1894 by request re of sister bitter stephens ot of wilson ward weber county I 1 send you a notice of her husbands death which occurred on the anat his name was alexander stephens he was born in roan county north carolina 1818 1813 moved to the state of illinois in 1831 and joined the church of jesus christ ot of latter day faints in 1841 or he moved to nauvoo in 1843 and worked on the temple at that place he belonged to the nancoo legion and served with that organization or a u aaion until july 1846 when he enlisted enli t id in the mormon battalion and went to california where he was present at atlee the first discovery of gold in 1848 from there he was a pioneer over the sierra nevada mountains mountain by the carson route to utah he was wounded in a battle with the indians indiana in utah county in 1851 or 62 he died as he be had lived faithful and true to the gospel his etis funeral bervi oes were held in the ward meeting house on the dinst the speakers were elders james S and moroni brown the bishop and some other elders all testified to the faith and honor of the deceased who leaves a wife and three sons and a great many friends and rel relatives stives to mourn his bis loss respectfully JAMES S BBOWN OLIVER P LEMMON oliver P lemmon of ma mall 11 creek whose accidental death on wednesday was reported in the NEWS columns on thursday was the son of washington lemmon and tamer stephens lemmon and was born september 1843 at adams county illinois he married caroline helm and raised a family of six sons and three daughters two of the thee e preceded him to that better world he made his bis home at mill creek whore where he be lived and worked to leave a mark behind him which he accomplished and that thai mark is a good one for he was engaged in every good work to benefit his fellow man especially the young and rising operation one ration in the Y M M I 1 A the Jeue A anday school when the latter was first organized in mill creek ward he was chosen as a teacher and he continued until he was chosen superintendent which position he held at his death he was the presiding Elder over the first district of acting teachers for many years he was not an eloquent speaker but to S speak peak around ones home and fireside he had but lew few equals tor soundness of doctrine he was a good scholar a wise counselor on scriptural and temporal affairs and was beloved and respected by all good men he was waa chosen one of the presidents residents esi dents of the sixty first quorum of seventies and was the second oldest president and took the lead in all affairs of the quorum on the occasion of his funeral on the dinst the large ward house was filled the sunday school children sang the hymn ill serve the lord and prayer was offered offered by elder john cook william H hill and charles stillman Sli Uman of the presidency of the sixty firby quorum of seventies also E EH H williams joseph A cornwall assistant superintendent of sunday school bishop david brinton of cottonwood Coti onwood ward counselors james B R miller and jens hanson hansen spoke of their acquaintance with the deceased praised raised his faithfulness and energy and knew new that be would be mourned and missed by the whole ward bishop J C hamilton bore testimony to the remarks for brother lemmon was an efficient officer in the ward it made no difference where he was placed to work he did it with a will and it was well done the bishop explained to the assembly the nature of the accident that resulted in brother lemmons Lem mona death his bis body was paralyzed from the hips down which caused hla his speedy death he bore the pain without a murmur and he was conscious to the last laist after further farther remarks by bishop john neff of east mill greek creek and bishop butler of granite ward elder J E taylor of the salt lake stake presidency explained that in the midst of lile life we are in death and that we do not understand the reason why good men are stricken down in death and others left alive but we would know it some day and he counseled all to prepare themselves and live the lives of latter day saints elder H J grant of the twelve apostles said from the remarks made by the previous speakers he drew the conclusion that thai brother lemmon was a faithful missionary called to labor in zion to teach the principles of the gospel to the sons son and daughters born at home in zion and it was a greater mission to teach them than to go to the wicked in the world to convert them hence all sunday school teachers were filling a great mission and they will receive their reward those who have obeyed the first principles of the gospel and con tinned faithful ua shall shad have part in the first resurrection resurrect iOD they are child children rexi ot of the church of the first born and shall receive celestial glory the sorrow we feel fee atthe death of loved ones who have been faithful is mingled with joy for we know that enot another her one has haa been born to immortality and eternal life the children sang when shall we meet thee and benediction was pronounced by T W russell bussell eighty eight vehicles carried the mourners to the cemetery and the coffin was covered with beautiful flowers tributes of love and real respect act from the donors gao aso B BAILEY in his infinite might amigh t to take from us this noble brave and good boy just at that age when life seemed brig brightest hest eat for dimand his parents were beginning to reap the harvest of their 13 years of watchfulness and care wallace was an exceptional boy so bright so BO good so thoughtful of others verily a staff upon which his parents could loan lean with utmost safety no greater bravery was ever shown than was waa shown by this poor boy during his long suffering no complaint faint or dissatisfied murmuring was geard heard from him and though he suffered as few have suffered ered he died as he lived brave true and thoroughly faithful A tow few moments before he died he turned to his bia younger brother and said leo this is the happiest moment of my life I 1 aw the places that knew him once shall know him no more the aching void left in his parents and friends Iri enda hearts cannot be filled but we know he has gone to him who said suffer little children to come unto me for such is the kingdom of heaven 11 gods will be done and to his parents little brothers and sisters and relatives goes out such heartfelt sympathy as under such circumstances must indeed be comforting K R MARTHA M PIPKIN Fruit froitland fruitland land NM N M sept 20 1894 sister martha matthews pipkin was born aug 1816 in franklin county miss mias she married daniel yarber by whom she had three children two daughter gaters and one son who survive her daniel yarber died in 1848 and she married aser pipkin some time in 1888 1858 she W was baptized into the church of jesus christ of latter day saints on the of may 1876 by elder mcallister and confirmed by elder H or boyle emigrated with her husband and their children in 1877 casting their lot with the colony of saints at sunset arizona were then called by elder erastus snow to help build buildup up savoya where they resided ten years ti then moved to fruitland froitland Fruit land N M in april 1894 she received a partial stroke of paralysis from which she never ie recovered from that date her strength gradually failed until the of september when she quietly passed away she was an industrious patient woman bearing all her afflictions without a murmur and died strong in the faith and hope of the latter day work and a glorious resurrection J R YOUNG |
