fint presidency of the church to the presidency of the mission and haa ban entered upon the duties of his position posit ioD in giving council to the elders in the fiela on the subject of missionary dutiel has ban the following to say in the star sar 1 I recommend to the brethren engaged in the ministry a careful perusal of president george Q Cap cannons fx ex cellena eel lent article on the length of missions which appears in this issue iesue I 1 met this thin question on the first day of my arrival it seems that the brethren have it fixed in their minds that a mission means mean just two years while thiv this has been the average leng length of missions in the pasts past and I 1 have not learned that any ch change ange in this matter is contemplated by president ff woodruff it itaho ulu be borne in mind that no deh definite length of time has been fixed for a mission some elders have performed honorable missions of only a few months 1 duration and others have been called to fill missions mie that have required their absence home four years and even longer the brethren should lot let the question of time recede to the background and let the question ol of how much good devoted labor can be performed during a mission come to the front and engage their whole attention if this course is followed fall owed the time spent on a mission will seem tut lut short while a different course will make the mirslow seem unbearably long let each of us try to be an all examae in diligence in patience in loog long buffering hii fieri ng and in all the gifts und and graces of the G to all men that our words may be the hordof the lord unto the geiple then will the time spent on our mission minion be the happiest period of our lives the article referred to which is taken from the juvenile instructor is ia as follone tol fOl lowe the president of a mission was wait speaking to us ua the other day in rela tiou dun to ai a idea which has become very prevalent among the concerning the duration of their missions it seems to be the opinion of many that when they have been absent two years they should be released to return borne bome and some feel if they are detained beyond that timet time that batitis it ie more than should be required require i of them this president had bad occasion to say to an elder whose circumstances cincu instances were such as aa to make his return almost almeeta a that when two years were expired ae he thought he ought tu to be re leased another elder was waa present sit at this conversation and when he be afterwards was required to stay a little lunger longer than hie bis follow fellow laborer he felt as though he was being InD imposed posed upon I 1 and yet his bia anally lankily at home was welt weli situated aud and there was not the least necessity for him to hurry burry home we think this impression that two years is the limit of time that elders ought to be required to stay on missions is not a good oue one and it should not be fostered in their minds circumstances might require them to stay for a longer period us tie it might be an injury to the mission and a serious disadvantage to release them earlier we have known of cues where it has been necessary nece for elders to stay three years and sometimes longer and in thus remaining they were able to pep pen form an excellent work sometimes sometime accomplishing in we the last year of labor more than they had done in all the time previously when elders are called to go on missions they should make up their minus that they will remain as long as a it may be deemed necessary necee Bary for the good of tle the work A Juul cious president of a mission will not neglect hl his fellow servants and will not impose burdens burdene upon them which they should not carry he especially when he meets with other elden in conference in ie in a position to judge as to the pro briety of it aking releases and an aim elder eider should be quite content to stay until the spirit indicates that he be cm can be spared to return home there to Is reason to believe that the usefulness of many ciany has been impaired by their getting the idea that at the expiration ot of two yeam they must be released such a feeling should not be on eo cou raged 11 II I |
