Show I 1 industries COMMERCE AND MINES the of the pioneer electric power company at ogden yesterday the means meana a great areat deal for the junction city and vicinity and ultimately for the territory the scheme echeme has rc elved mentioned in the NEWS several times during the past three months while it was being worked up it la Is a stupendous undertaking requiring a vast amount of capital and strong executive ability to insure its ite these elements are secured in the company that has been formed and the prosecution of the enterprise in harnessing the mighty powers oi of a river anu anil utilizing them for the operation of will mills and machinery of all kinds may be a suggestion to the people of utah of some of the great and wonder ful forces that lie within her borders the object of the now new company is to utilize the water power of ogden river fiver which to is not leas than horse borse power under ordinary circumstances and to establish a plant that v furnish u r n lab the motive power wr aubr 1 all 1 j kinds of manufacturing and industrial enterprises and to offer encouragement and the necessary inducements for their loua location tiou at ogden the company is organized with gen Q i cannon jp president resident F J kissel vice president C K Ilan bannister nister secretary and treasurer frank J cannon general manager C K bannister chief engineer and these with wilford woodruff joseph F smith john B R winder asahel asabel H woodruff and A B patton form the board of directors negotiations for the removal to ogden of several of the largest in du enterprises in the country have been pending for some time and frank J cannon and C K bannister will start east within a short time to iose close the matters up their trip may extend to europe the further pro edinge oe of this great enterprise will be watched with interest in all parts parti of the territory it to is now stated that the sm shelters smelters elters will vill have a now new deal with the ore producers at the first of the year in which the price of reducing creswill go 0 o up from 20 to 26 25 per cent the suggestion is that a pool will be formed to t effect this change it to Is known that for a long time the smelters shelters sm elters have been cutting each other until there is little or no profit for some of them in running but they cannot afford to shut chut down because this would entail the loss of the vast amount of capital invested invented the three utah smelters shelters sm elters are crowded closely to the wall by the big pm emeleen elters of colorado and by discriminations in railway rates ono one special feature that the suggested pool would have to deal within with is the md lead ore question upon which the pro posed removal of the tariff on lead will have considerable effect in the present rate of lead production it is difficult for the smelters shelters sm elters to got get sufficient lead ore to enable them to collect all the silver oliver because of this the utah mar ket bet has been stripped of its lead ores lor for the colorado smelters shelters sm elters at least 46 per cent of this ore to la necessary in each charge and the large proportion of dry ores make necessary a heavy draft on the lead production most moet of which in utah is from the bingham mines minee such mines minea as aa the horn silver have sufficient lead in their output as does also the bullion beck back which Is now running on a body of lead ore but big producers prod like the ontario daly and a boat of others are short on this metal this shortage enables the lead producers to have their ore reduced by the sm shelters smelters mel elters tera at a very low figure isaac jennings president of the grizzly mining company has baa hied bled himself to the company ld proper properties ties a at t ruby hill nevada and it to is confidently expected that when he be returns he be will con confirm firm some good news just received atom the mines the grizzly company has been pushing steadily along in development work since eiloe its good luck last summer in striking a vein of rich ore ore is in now being taken from the mine and on monday the ten stamp mill was started the purpose being to keep it f fully supplied irom from the companas comp anys mines but mr jenningss visit there is not specially on account of the mill wor workings kine his call there was because of a new and rich strike of ore that had been made samples of the ore body encountered were expressed to this city and when examined they proved to be chunks of almost nure dure sliver silver jt it is in connection with this find that mr jennings made the trip and his fellow stockholders believe that when he returns he be will have something rood good to tell captain smith who acquired fame as a mine operator on the comstock Com and later as superintendent of the bullion book beck in utah has charge of the comp anys mines at ruby hill where he is laboring to the end that they shall be placed in fist arst class working condition condit ioB the people in wayne county may be a little short of circulating medium so far as coined money is concerned but they have some of the precious metal down there with which to pay their bills as shown by the contents of a peculiar package received at the NEWS office it is in suggestive ef cf the early days of the gold discovery on the pacific coast when payment for supplies supplied were made in gold dust accompanying the package referred to was the following note TEASDALE wayne county nov 22 1893 editor deseret near I 1 send pend you by registered mall mail some gold on account the man I 1 received it from said there was 17 50 please return assayers abmyer s papers with the amount of worth and oblige COLEMAN in the package was the free gold as an it appears after the quicksilver amalgamating ga mating process it was placed in the hands hanas of an assayer today so that mr Colem colemann Coleman anle 8 request bof his certificate way may be complied with the work on the new mammoth mill at eureka and the be extensive system of waterworks water works now being put in by the mammoth company for the opera tion ot of the mine in ia being pushed for ward as rapidly as circumstances will allow while there to is not much that can be done in the way of construction on the ground at present such as oan can be in kept going and machinery and material is being provided to hasten the work to its conclusion there is ia a large amount of machinery and iron work necessary for mill and water works and the managers of the company are keeping the work ut at home the heavy castings are now being made at anderson sons foundry on fifth south street where a large lot for both mill and waterworks water works was completed last evening the machinery fitting and other work which ip id often contracted for in the fast east but in this instance is in being keptot kept at home by the mammoth people amounts to a snug sum for home work workmen in its workmanship the local product is superior to that which can be shipped in here at the same game figures the woolen mills at washington Wao hington county are thus spoken of by the beaver etonian Uto Ulon nian tan this institution of our southern neighbor is accomplish ing a great amount of good within the past six weeks about worth of goods has been sold it has required a great deal of lab T to produce these goods and we are informed that the present demand so for far exceeds the supply that if the fa factory tory were kept running continuously day and night it could not oil fill the orders it has on file to date and keep up its local trade the mills have material enough on hand for a yearns dunand run and more bands are needed some dome six young ladies weavers could get employment there we are proud to 0 know that southern utah has one institution doing cluing so much for its people as the washington mills are and hopes that we are not far from from the time when the beaver mills will once more be humming bumming and opening up a means of employment and support for many of our worthy citizens the benefits from the washington Washing tun mills are being widely felt the good people of the south duly appreciate a good thing when they have it and will no be so me foolish as to soon let it be taken from them they foster it encourage 14 it support it they use its products almost to the exclusion of all other pro ducts of the same kind millard county blade mr isom isaac aldredge Al sr who for some weeks has ha nt ending the work of tho the irrigating Irr Iri gating company informs us that about sixty five tons of lava rook hove have been used in repairing and strength ening the river darn dam which to is used jointly by the deseret irrigation co and the deseret and salt lake canal company mr aldredge also states state that a substantial adgate he has haa been placed in the main canal at the upper end nd of the bottom that the bead IJ gate to is sufficiently strong and high to enable the two companies to reservoir considerable water to the river bottom above which means that not less lees than acres will be covered by a depth of three feet of available water other important improvements improvement have been made and mr aldredge suggests that it if there are any kickers it will be well for them to visit the work so eo as to kick intelligently cocol collections Collect loot iona ions have bean bettor better tho the past ten days day than at any time since the lot let of july said a prominent business man today we have had remarkable success in getting in our bills and I 1 find that others are in thy the same position there is no increase in business though the volume of trade is lair fair considering the circumstances cirou instances money has come in from somewhere though and has got into circulation some of those who were holding back their cash because of the general feeling of hard bard times are now loosening their grip on it and making invest ments and purchases some of those who have hold held back from making pay ments which they could have made months ago also have paid up As A a money has become obtainable at a reasonable rate of interest so it has gone into circulation quickly with our bills being paid we can branch out further and so aid in helping the times for the past four years the deop people e of this section and the traveling public have been crying aloud for an improvement pro in the road between deseret land and ingersol Inger says the millard county blade the spring floods bring down enormous quantities of SOU soil which settles in the bottom of the river channel and along the banks the taking out of so huoh water for irrigation and the consequent drying up of the river for a short time during the sum mer permits the willows to so encroach on the channel as to force the water out over the banks to in places and tue the result to is that the road is rendered impassable every spring and fall necessitating large detours in order to avoid the mud all the freight and a great portion of the passenger travel to nevada goes west over this road and it is a question of only a very short time before the western part of this county will enter such a vigorous protest as will cause some hard thinking in other parts of the county nearly every day some bewildered traveler gets stuck in the mud holes boles and it is a pity that those who are responsible for the condition of the roads roada westward can not be chucked in the mud holes and left there until a reformation would come to them A few hundred dollars in labor judiciously applied in levying up the river banks would effect the needed improvement lehl banner we are informed by T B R cutler manager that he has just received word from their german I 1 correspondent that part of heir order for beet seed need had to be cancelled and that owing to the drought and unfavorable season for seed prices had advanced over 60 50 per cent so there is tio no doubt that the company will have to charge more for beet seed the coming V season since wednesday the to the manager cutler has bas paid out the sum of which is a much larger sum no doubt than has as keen been paid out by all the other factories in utah in the same time the people of utah county are getting their eyes opened regarding the amount of means the factory is scattering in the different towns brigham bugler we are informed ahat a definite movement is on foot for an immediate colonization of the vast ilear bear river canal tract of a quarter of a million aulion acres lying twelve miles northwest of brigham city A powerful company with several hundred thousand dollars dollare ready cash at its ite back has espoused the scheme it guarantees to have fifty families on the lands at crack of spring it also proposes to push its colonization project no ho vigorously that at the expiration of five years the great west canal will be placed on a paying basis this means a lot of tall rustling but we trust the venture will prove a gratifyingly bucce successful a saul one it is also said that dust on the east canal will also be raised Co coalville alville chronicle on monday the wasatch mine was opened and the work of extinguishing the fire begun on n tuesday they had bad penetrated to the level to the pump house where the fire started and were making good progress the fire has done considerable damage but not as much as they expected superintendent parmley says they will have no trouble in put ting jog the fire out and thinks they can begin getting out coal next u ex t week how the he fire originated is still a mystery there are many different theories the management when asked about it shake their heads wisely and refuse to say anything which shows they think there is a on the fence boise idaho democrat william frame co have a most flattering coal prospect it is at horseshoe bend 1 on the payette at a depth of 26 feet they struck shattered coal and a little on cut into a solid body which hey bey found to be six feet thick and below this more loose loons coal the coal lies almost horizontal and between beds of clay six feet of solid coal of excellent quality is a fair start and a good indication of quantity but bat its extent is yet to be determined mr frame says they nave have a government patent which includes 80 acres of land and that work will probably be resumed on the prospect this winter the provo mills will run about six weeks longer this season and then close down by that time the contract for cloth for the california state stale g guards U ards uniforms will be completed it Is necessary for the mills to be closed for the over overhauling bauling and repairs repair made essential by running I 1 constantly for several mouths months tale overhauling can be completed by the first of march and it if the outlook warrants it the mills will not be long after that in resuming operations Co coalville alville Chro chronicle nible david moore returned this week from omaha where ire he be has been with a shipment of cattle there were eighteen carload oar loads 8 in the shipment he reports the returns as most satisfactory running somewhat higher than the last shipment and giving the people considerable more than they could get here these sales of cattle have been a great aid to th the farmers in raising money for thele their taxes ephraim enterprise by next saturday night the track layers of the sanpete valley will reach manti and ana the temple city will have the advantage of railroads we hope the next move will be a further extension ext extent ennion sion south denver sun the threatened coal war has been averted A combine b has
