waiting room said francis cope esq the popular passenger agent to a group of gentlemen who were loitering about the platform at the utah central depot yesterday morning at about 10 f ahe he individuals addressed were members of the city government and other prominent gentlemen who had been invited efio to yo go to ogden to meet the veteran Fir emens excursion the persons pei bons addressed immediately complied with th tha request and within a few moments a circle was formed in the waiting room which mr cope addressed ue lie explained that the excursionists would oe be several hours behind time in reaching ogden and that it had been suggested that the party from salt lake defer its depart cutill uie till soini time in the afternoon mayor abor armstrong thought it would be more agreeable to wait in salt lake than 1 in 0 aden another gentleman said that if the party dispersed it would probably not all assemble ablin again mr cope said the engine and coach were RIMA READY Y FOR THE START to ogden if the party wished to go at once or they would be made ready at any hour hoar desired in the afternoon some one moved that the party start otonce at once the motion was seconded and put byar cope some voted for and others against it and mr cope cop e announced the majority majori t y has it I 1 and all started for the coach nat at 1030 the special pulled out on L oard loard were mayor armstrong chief ottinger of ef the fire department T G webber D K davis john dark clark robert patrick S P francis cope and john kirkman birkman of edthe the city cily co council fireman joined the party at ogden there were also several ladies jadi eion on the train on OB the run which was made in an hour and a half there were told some stories ot of fires and fraternal fights in which go ham firebugs fire bugs on board had participated which were highly characteristic of the volunteer fire department part ment of the metropolis in former years on the arrival of the party in ogden it was learned that the excursion train would not arrive until seven or later then came a highly graceful and hospitable act on the part of some of the firemen of the junction city six carriages were procured and the salt lakers were taken on a drive INTO OGDEN CANYON where they inspected thin the electric light works the water works the tine fine scenery etc thus wh whiling away 13 several everal hours bours in a very agreeable agreda agree anle le manner mr ford assistant foreman of the hook and ladder boys and hyram lewis esq an honorary member of the 0 den fire brigade are chiefly responsible for this ibis treatment towards the visitors the ogden firemen had made preparations to receive the excursionists excursion fats in a fitting manner and in company with the visitors from salt lake waited impatiently for the delayed train it was expected about four out but repeated dispatches came announcing its its loss of time until at length was fixed as the hour hoar when it would reach ogden the ogden fire brigade had been all eagerness to welcome the excursionists and shortly before 7 formed in procession at their hall an and d marched marche d to the depot preceded by the ogden city band a fine organization by the way throngs of people streamed towards the depot before during and after the marching thither of the fire brigade the platforms surrounding therall the railroad became becam e a SEA 0 OF HUMANITY and appearances indicated that tue the population of ogden had been reinforced by that of neighboring country districts another dispatch came deterring deferring the arrival of the excursion train till and while the multitude surged and waited the osden ogden city band played occasionally at length the whistle of the expected train funded and at this signal somi some half a cazen dozen elgines in the yard joined la in one united and terrific scream of welcome when the excursion train stopped the ogden city band struck up and the visitors from salt L Lake ake with the chief and other officers of the ogden bogde it fire brigade out the president of the new york veteran Fir emens association to extend a personal welcome in response to the music of the ogden band and the reception tendered the excursion by the citizens cappas cappal a band slighted alighted from the train and played a selection in a style that THRILLED THE MULTITUDE after the loss of less than half an hours time the excursion train left lef t for salt lake the coach of the escort from this city was attached to it aind the of the party mingled with the firemen iu in a sociable way during the run sout southward bward the old time firemen of new york who reside alifare were very cordially treated by the ex the train reached the utah central depot at about 10 and on its arrival the firemen formed and marched up uptown town most moist of them stopped at the walker house this morning mor at about 9 the salt lake fire Depart mentin uniform formed at their hall ball and led by holds band marched down first south street to third west and with a right wheel continued to the utah central depot on the south side of south temple street just east of the depot the salt lake firemen formed in sia aid gle line facing the di entre centre of the street cappss cappas band and the new york ff firemen r emlu then formed at the depot and marched eastward the veterans drawing ameir their ancient hand eugine engine the salt lake firemen stood UNCOVERED HEADS while their visitors marched by and the latter responded by raising their hats while passing after going beyond the line of salt lake firemen the new york veterans formed in I 1 n single line ks as the former bad done and the mutual salute was performed as before this maneuvering was very graceful and neatly executed throughout after this exchange of f salutes the salt laka lak fire department preceded by holds band marched toward main street sad a ud were followed by capp cappas as band which in turn was followed by the new york firemen pulling their hand engine itwara it was a SPLENDID procession and excited the admiration of the thron throngs gs of people who lined the streets through ah which it passed As the famous seventh regiment band wheeled into main street it struck up an air and the streets of this city have seldom if ever before re sounded with such strains as this magnificent organization poured forth the procession marched down main to third south thence cast to second east thence north to first south street and thence west past the Fir emens hall at the latter place the steamer and hose cart each with its span of horses atta attached chedi stood on the side walk As the new york firemen passed the steamer ste atner whistled a salute and tile the crew ot of the steamer and hose cart sent up a cheer in which the crowd along the street joi joined ned with a vim the procession continued contin ded down first south street to the utah nevada depot holds and cappss cappas bands playing alternately as a a they had bad done during the march A long dotibee HEADER was in waltine waiting to take the firemen and the general public to gatfield two cars were reserved for the seventh regiment band two for the salt lake firemen and four for the tb new york firemen about eight or ten cars were allotted to the public shortly after 11 the train rolled out THE accompanied by ladies the organization bation was formed in 1885 and a person to be eligible for membership must have belonged to the old volunteer fire department of new york city prior to the time it was disbanded in or about iva which event occurred at about the time of the introduction of steam fire engines engine 6 not a fireman among the excursionists excursion iStO is less than forty six years old and many seem to be bordering upon and some to have passed the allotted age of man many of the party since they were volunteer firemen have attained wealth and distinction and all of them are well to do each is provided with three ins a lil lud blue a smoked pearl and a drab they wore the second while on parade today to day REPEATED OVATIONS have been extended to the party since its departure from new york city on the ath dinst buffalo was reached at about 2 am and the firemen there made a great demonstration and exacted a promise that the excursion would on its return make a stop there at chicago a grand time was had bad as detailed in the press dispatches at omaha the enthusiasm of the citizens in welcoming the veterans was boundless in many instances when some of df the latter would enter a store to purchase some small article such sach as a necktie etc th etore estore keepers would refuse to accept payment at cheyenne the fire department turned out with great enthusiasm to greet the excursionists though the latter could stop there but a f few minutes between evanston and ogden A TERRIFIC RATE KATE op OF SPEED was at times made by the excursion train A mile a minute was f frequently reached and the last forty miles before reaching ogden was covered in forty five minutes the train was drawn by a locomotive ot of tremendous power and immense proportions and contained ten sleeping and dining cars provided with every convenience and luxury lew forbes is the engineer r and bert mckenzie the conductor trainmaster mcintosh was aboard and agent ingalls of this city met the train green river and returned with it the utah nevada train bearing the firemen arrived at garfield shortly before noo nooland nand the visitors proceeded to participate in the pleasures of the place bathing boating etc during the afternoon a grand dinner was given in honor of the veterans speeches were made and a occurred preparations for which had bad been kept a secret the firemen of this city had had made from utah silver a miniature hydrant with a section of hose coiled around it and a firemans foremans fi remans hat leaning against it the device being an inscription showing that it was presented to the new york veteran Fir emens association by the salt lake fire brigade chief ottinger made the presentation in a suitable speech and the gift was accepted with appropriate expressions pres of of appreciation it will adorn the club house of the association asso cig in new york the excursionists will return to ems city from garfield in time for far capp cappas as band to prepare for the concert to be given in the theatre this evening and at or about midnight the visitors will board their own train and start for the west |
