Some teachers especially teachers will tell you that when kids return to classes each fall, they sometimes have some catching up to do. They lose some of their basic skills if they dont use them during the summer months. Most parents dont want their children to have a tough time in school, so here are a few things you might do to keep your childrens n inds sharp during the hot elementary months. Talk to them now about how much and what they should read during June, July and August. Let them know you expect them to haunt the nearest library this summer. Ask them what specific books they want to read, and write-dowthe titles. Hien casually ask them as the weeks pass, something like this: What about that book you were telling me about something about the Great n or something that. Have you gotten one read yet? Dr. Blair Low, professor of secondary education and director of professional laboratory experiences, points out that the number of school children in the state is increasing faster than expected, and the number of teachers being trained is not keeping up. ' Recently compiled figures released by the Utah State Board of Education show that the flW fall enrollment was about 6,000 students larger than the projections for 1979-8-0 prepared a few years ago. For the 1960-7- decade 0 Utah showed a loss of 11,000 persons, while the 1970-8decade produced a gain of 80,000. That has been called the largest influx of new population into Utah of any decade in its history. The projected enrollment 0 Let him figure out how many youll need, and how long theyll be. Clearly, government is making the American dream of home ownership a fainter ond more distant hope. Inflation has more than tripled since 1976! There is an alternative: The 2 Solution. Consider the record: Before the President took office, the annual inflation rate was 4.8. The rate in February was 18. Federal spending has grown at double digit rates since 1976 and is now proposed to increase by a whopping Fact: If the President and the Congress would slow the annual growth of spending by a mere two percentage points during the next 18 months, they would balance the budget, reduce inflation, ond cause interest rates to fall. Fact: If the administration would sbw the growth of federal taxes by a mere 2 to encourage savings and investment, inflation and interest rates would decline and make it possible for more Americans to invest in their dream homes. It would also allow companies to increase investment in new plant and equipment, which would improve productivity and create pbs. for 1980. Carter's program: Higher inflation and interest rates. Teacher By Judith Degn Vanler It never ceases to amaze me that the human mind has so many ways to connect, sort and synthesise information and has even greater capacity, it appears, to ignore and deliberately scatter attention so that synthesis becomes totally allusive. An investigation into the nature of the mind soon reveals that it habitually finds ways to avoid even simple truths that it conceives as threatening. This phenomenon of mental avoidance became very clear through and years of experience in the motivational field. To overcome the nature of the mind 1 devised techniques to trick the mind into unsuspecting cooperation. One might say that the methods used in my corporate and personnel training seminars result in a mental judo. Careful placement of questions and answers sets the mind up to expose itself. Lets see how it works. As a regular part of my training seminars, I bring out a colored bag of artificial fruits which the audience agrees to as being real. One by one I pull out a peach, a pear, a cherry and an apple and ask what would be found inside the fruits if they were cut open. The collective answers come back bright and easy, A peach pit, pear seeds, a cherry pit and apple seeds. A deliberately arched eyebrow lets them know that I'm surprised by such absolute knowledge, but they don't budge from their answers. Then they are asked what they would expect to grow if they planted the peach pit, the pears seeds etc. People love to answer the quiz because the answers seem so obvious and its the mind loves to be right. hard to make a mistake Peach trees would grow from peach pits, comes the reply. Pear trees would grow from pear seeds, and so on. At this stage, I make a point of asking if anybody believes that anything other than a peach tree could indeed grow from a peach pit or a pear tree from a pear seed. This line of questioning always elicits enthustiastic no's from all. I want more commitment. Walking back and forth in front of everybody several times holding up the apple I persist by asking if there lies a shread of doubt about the type of tree that would issue out of an apple seed. Animated shaking of heads from side to side usually accompanies the emphatic which ring out with good natured but cocky NOS! assuredness. By this time everybody has invested themselves 100 percent in the belief that peach trees come from peach pits and that little green apple trees come from apple seeds. They savor their quiz victory as I begin shaking my head as if troubled by the infalibility of their answers, lb add to the drama of the situation I pace back and forth several more times giving the deliberate impression that Im struggling to formulate my thoughts before proceeding. was South, Syracuse, commissioned a second lieutenant and awarded a Shortage of teachers foreseen Unless A s me som-tPsur- tt commission, diploma by Dr. Daryl J.
