There should be some highlights Utah reservoirs among northern while streams are generally high and unstockable. East Canyon, Lost Creek Roger Thomas, director of the Clearfield City Recreation Program, says plenty of fun is in store for those who choose to participate in the summer recreation program. Registration for the following summer programs will be taken at the Clearfield Recreation Office located at the Clearfield Swim Pool Building 934 South Falcon Drive (1000 E). Monday thru Friday 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays 1:30 p.m. to 9 p m. from Tuesday May 27th to Friday and Pineview should provide good fishing, with Rockport possibly the highlight of the region. MAJOR LAKES AND RESERVOIRS EAST CANYON An excellent camping state park which always has heavy pressure on the opening weekend. Fishing should be good for rainbow trout with an occasional brown trout and kokanee salmon being taken. May be good from shore as well as boats. ECHO RESERVOIR Should fill by the opener. Because of extreme drawdown last fall, stocking was only partial. A variety of species may be caught with rainbow trout of approximately three sizes dominating the creel. Shore fishermen may pick up a lot of rough fish, especially on the east side of the reservoir this year. To avoid this problem, fish deep at the west end of the reservoir. PORCUPINE RESERVOIR Limited camping on private land with poor facilities hamper overnight visits to this Cache Valley water. The fishing should be only fair for small rainbow trout, but fishing deep with triple teasers from boats should produce some good catches of kokanee salmon. Quite muddy, Road may be washed out two miles below the reservoir if accessible. Fishing will be slow. NORTHEASTERN REGION FISHING FORECAST 1980 . . The opening weekend of fishing season in the Northeastern Region is expected to be good in those lakes and reservoirs that will be accessible. The heavy snowfall and wet spring has delayed access into the higher lakes, but they will be stocked as soon as they are accessible. Many of the streams will be receiving high runoff during the next few weeks; therefore, fish stocking will be delayed. Many will not be stocked for the opener. The following is an alphabetical listing of all the waters in the Northeastern Region: BIG SAND WASH RESERVOIR Located just east of Altamont, this water is expected to produce good fishing for the opener. The reservoir is almost full so boating activity will be available. A large rainbow trout can be expected out of this reservoir. Limited camping available. facilities are RESERVOIR Expe BROUGH cted to be only fair fishing on the opening. No improved campgrounds are available. BROWNE LAKE Located high in the Uinta Mountains. Browne offers some of the best scenery around. Fishing is expected to be fair for brook trout as well as rainbow. Pan sized trout can be taken from the stream below. Good camping facilities are available. Be prepared for bad roads if the weather is stormy. BRUSH CREEK This creek will not be stocked for the opener because of the high water. As water conditions improve, rainbow catachables will be stocked. Stocked BULLOCK RESERVOIR with rainbow catchables. No camping or boat launching facilities available. Fishing is expected to be good. RESERVOIR This CALDER reservoir was recently purchased by the Division of Wildlife Resources. It was not stocked last year but will be available for fishing this year. It will be stocked with rainbow trout just as soon as it is accessible. Calder Reservoir is located on Diamond Mountain just west of Crouse Reservoir. No camping facilities are available. CART CREEK Will be open to fishing upstream from its confluence with Speirs Creek; but will remain closed below this point until July 1. Water may be discolored because of runoff. The stream Will be stocked with rainbow catchables for the opener. Improved campgrounds are available in the areal ' CARTER CREEK This stream will be stocked with rainbow catchables in the Deep Creek area as soon as the road is passable. Stocking may not occur before the opener so check on the conditions before traveling to upper Carter Creek. The section of Carter Creek below High- way 44 isclosed throughJtfne 30. CROUSE" RESERVOIR Located on Diamond Mountain, Crouse Reservoir will provide good rainbow trout fishing for the entire family. Access will be delayed, but it should be stocked for the opener. Please haul out your own refuse because there is no garbage pickup at Crouse or Calder. stream CURRANT CREEK-T- his opens July 1. Fishing is expected to be cutthroat and brown good for trout as well as some catchable rainbow. It is expected to have a high runoff. Improved access into the area will draw large crowds. There are limited campgrounds to the area. river is DUCHESNE RIVER-T- his designated as a wild fish stream and receives no catchable fish. Brown, cutthroat and whitefish can be caught in the Duchesne River. Most of the area around this stream is private land so please respect it. EAST PARK RESERVOIR This reservoir is located along the Red CldudLooji Road ahd is accessible by paved road except for the last mile. Improved are campgrounds available. Expect pan sized rainbow with an added treat of some nice brook trout. Because of the wet conditions, this reservoir will probably not be stocked for the opening weekend. GORGE RESERFLAMING water conVOIR This year-roun- d tinues to provide trophy fishing as well as fair catches of small rainbow trout. Fishing can be spotty; however, many large brown and lake trout have been taken during the spring months. Fishing has been picking up for rainbow trout. Several improved campgrounds are available to the angler as well as five boat ramps on the Utah side of the reservoir. GREEN RIVER-T- his stream offers a variety of entertainment. Float trips are growing more popular every year, and fishing for rainbow catchables can provide a good angling experience. Cutthroat are also common. The modification of the penstocks on the Flaming Gorge Dam has improved the fishery as well as making the float trip more enjoyable. A trail between the dam and Little Hole allows for easy foot access along the stream. Large rainbow are found in the lower stretches of the Green River between Little Hole and Browns Park. Be sure to follow all safety precautions while floating the river. JONES HOLE CREEK Flowing below the Jones Hole Fish Hatchery, Jones Hole Creek offers brown, cutthroat and some rainbow fishing. A trail leads downstream to its confluence wi th the Green River. Access to this stream is by an improved road over Diamond Mountain. LAKE FORK RIVER-T- his river is controlled by Moon Lake. It will be lightly stocked with rainbow catchables and should have a good population of brook trout in the beaver ponds. There should be no access problems, available. and campsites are LITTLE BRUSH CREEK-T- he road into this area is late in opening; therefore, it will probably not be open for the May 31 opener. It will be stocked with rainbow catchables as soon as it is accessible. MIDDLE SHEEP FORK CREEK This small stream parallels the road to Spirit Lake. It is doubtful that it will be stocked prior to the opener. The beaver ponds have cutthroat trout. MOON LAKE Will be stocked with rainbow catchables. Also, some kokanee salmon and whitefish are found there naturally. No access problems. Excellent camping facilities are available as well as a lodge and cabins. NORTH ASHLEY FORK CREEK Access to this stream may be a problem since it is located high in the Uintas along the Red Cloud Loop -- include forehand and backhand ground stokes, volleys, serves and gan e play. Bring your own tennis racquet and balls. Recreational. Swimming Lessons: 12 at Clearfield Swim June Pool. Swim lessons will be held on Tuesday from 11 a.m. - 12 noon. Registrants must have completed the third grade in school or be 8 years old. The fee for 10 lessons will be $8 Classes Clfd Elementary 28 at School. 2 y classes available for those ages Monday 8:30 a.m. 9:30 a.m. or Monday 9:30 a m. to 10:30 a.m. The cos! is $6 for 8 weeks or $15 per family. Fishermen should expect only fair fishing. This small state park offers a 6th. coordination. 2 at Baton Twirling: June7-AuguFisher Park south of Clfd. Swint Pool bldg. Classes held Saturdays frou 9 a. m. 10 a.m. for ages 8 and older. The cost is $5 tor 8 lessons. The ponds near Defas Ranch will be stocked prior to the opener and should provide good fishing. Excellent camping facilities are available along this stream. PARK RESERVOIR OAKS Normally stocked with rainbow with a good population of brook trout. Probably wont be stocked prior to the opener because of access problems. Improved campsites are available. Good fishing can be found in the stream below. Check with the Division office in Vernal for last minute details on Oaks Park. RESERVOIR This PARADISE reservoir is expected to be snowed in for the opener so no fish will be stocked. Check with local information before traveling to Paradise. PELICAN LAKE Open year-roun- d for bass and bluegill fishing at its best. Water level is at maximum and fishing is expected to be good by May 31. No improved campgrounds or boat launching facilities. POLE CREEK LAKE Will not be stocked prior to the opener because of heavy snow in the area. When open, it will be stocked with rainbow trout. RED CREEK RESERVOIR This reservoir will open May 31 on the general opener. Fishing is expected to be fair to good for rainbow trout There are no facilities available for camping. OAKS PARK RESERVOIR Normally stocked with rainbow with a good population of brook trout. Probably wont be stocked prior to the opener because of access problems. Improved campsites are available. Projects include puppets made from socks, stuffed animals, clay, paper sacks, etc., with instructions on writing skits and putting on performances. Materials provided. All children ages 3 can enter as many tournaments as possible. RED CREEK RESERVOIR This reservoir will open May 31 on the general opener. Fishing is expected to be fair to good for rainbow trout. There are no facilities available for camping. ROCK CREEK-W- ill be stocked with rainbow catchables. Brook and cutthroat are present from natural reproduction. No access problems. SHEEP CREEK-T- he creek will be open to fishing on May 31 in that portion above Highway 44. The section below Highway 44 will remain closed through June 30. It will be stocked with rainbow when water level goes down. Campgrounds and roads are expected to be in good condition. SHEEP CREEK LAKE Will not be stocked because of the wild cutthroat population. Roads should be passable with no particular access problem. No camping facilities available. ASHLEY FORK SOUTH CREEK This stream will be high and murky on the opener. Rainbow will be stocked when the water clears and the road is open. SPIRIT LAKE The road to Spirit Lake may not be open for the opening weekend. Therefore, it will be stocked at a later time. RESERVOIR A STARVATION smaller crowd is expected at Starvation Reservoir this year because it is open year-rounImproved camping facilities and boat ramps are available. Brown trout, lake trout, rainbow trout and walleye pike may be caught. RESERVOIR STEINAKER Rainbow trout and largemouth bass will be harvested at Steinaker Reservoir on the opening weekend. The lake is stocked with fingerlings; therefore, the fish are holdovers. There are some nice trout in the class. Fishing for bass may be fair. A state park at the reservoir provides good camping facilities if reservations are scheduled ahead of time. is a STRAWBERRY RIVER-T- his quality fishing stream and provides some excellent fly fishing for the expert. Only artificial flies are allowed. Fishing season for this stream between Soldier Creek and Red Creek will open July 1 and run through September 15. The limit is six fish. Check your proclamation for all regulations. The Strawberry River below Red Creek will be stocked wilh rainbow catchables for the May 31 opener. |
