QUARTERBACK: Hall, a senior now, has been an understudy to Hippie and Bradshaw so hes been in Snyders system. But, hes never thrown a pass in an Aggie game. He was the clubs MVP in leading USIU to as many wins (8) as the school has ever had. The school promptly dropped the sport. He has size (6-- 198), a good history (JC at Glendale JC in 1977) and a shot at a wide open major college job. 3, But, in Hippie and Bradshaw, the Aggies are looking for a replacement for the sixth and eighth most efficient passers in the country last year. RUNNING BACKS - With 3,537 yards over four years, Parros is USUs alltime leading rusher. And one of the most unheralded fullbacks at USU in years has Greg Martin graduated with Parros. Parros was 11th in the nation is rushing last year, seventh in scoring. In face of those two departures, Snyder is far from pressing the panic button. He likes the looks of some young runners -Marvin Jackson, Tony Barnett, Keith Nelson - along with the return of Jerry Copeny, who was running with Parros the of 79 before an injury wiped out Lis year. Fullback candidates include - - neck-and-ne- pre-seas- lettermen Willard Browner and Maurice Turner and squadmen Joe Schulter and John Banks. WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS - All the starters return here, what could be nicer? James Magic Murphy caught 63 passes for 6 TDs and 1067 yards a year ago as a sophomore and that earned him the third best racing in the country among wide receivers. He was also a PCAA r. Ken Bombzilla Thompson made second team allleague for finishing 13th nationally (48 catches, 11 TDs). His 11 TD grabs tied a school record and the four he hauled e record. in against Utah is a With talents the likes of Stacy Colbert and Fred Fernandes backing Murphy and Thompson, it appears the wide Same receiver spots are is true at tight end where Ken Brown is a battle-prove- n vet, and yet he faces the challenge of Kelly Tresedert who was a starter before a two-yechurch mission. OFFENSIVE LINE - As virtually everywhere else on the team, the line is not without some huge losses (both guards, Mike Glenn and Mike French, first-teame- one-gam- well-stocke- d. ar Rick Stachon have graduated.) But, with senior Mike Fosmark anchoring the returning line, there are a legion of major college programs around the and tackle 240-pou- country who would love to deal with USUs problems. As a freshman McClure hit a in Romney Staidum against San Jose State; the same year with 43.0 season average set a PCAA record. Steinke, the first team specialist in 1978 and second teamer in 1979, has scored 148 points in three years t USU. He has been the PCAA kick scoring leader the field goal past two years. His last year against Colorado State is one yard short of a school record. His field goal ratio as a sophomore (second in the country) fell off somewhat to last year. Steinke also holds school records for most PAT attempts in a season (39), most PATs in a season (37), most career field goals (27) and most career field goal attempts (42). The Aggie return game is not in bad shape either with specialist Stacy Colbert returning with his league-leadin- g n 9.2 average on punt runbacks. Colbert and sophomore Fred Fernandes will be candidates to handle 'that duty while Marvin Jackson, a sophomore, had a 26.8 yards a return average on kickoffs last season. nose second team guard Kelly Kirwan. A transfer to USU last year from Virginia Tech (Chris Albrittain) started six games at tackle and is prominent among the er returnees. He was slowed by a broken A jaw late in the year, but he is back and should be the nose guard. With Albrittains injury a freshman -Shawn Miller was forced into duty and started the last two games. He should have the inside track at one -tackle with a pair of Mike Perko and Vao Petaia in the battle for the other. Perko and Petaia were JC transfers to USU a year ago; Perko was injured and Petaia - rs - red-shirte- d. OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS - Like the wide receivers, the Aggies have virtually everybody back here. Dave England started the opener, was injured and knocked out for the year, and gave to Dave Bluford who started the final 10 games. Both positions, it appears, carry a quality 2 punch, Bluford was sixth and Ure eighth last year in total tackles with 73 and 67, respectively. Ciancone finished 14th in defensive points. USU INSIDE LINEBACKERS rotation in implemented a three-ma- n these two positions last year and two of the three graduated: Elwood Threlfall and Perry Drake. Threlfall was the team leader with 93 tackles; Drake was fifth with 77. Number two in tackles (with 92) was a sophomore: Dennis DeLoach. Now a junior, DeLoach was selected second team by the leagues coaches in addition to his honor as the Defensive Player of the Game in USUs close loss at Arizona State. In reserve to DeLoach at the left inside spot should be Clancey O'Hara, who played enough as a freshman to letter, and Andy Johnsen, a sophomore now who was a defensive lineman last could Some suspense year. materialize on the other side where Clint Farmer has the inside track, although he has lettered the past two years by virtue of his speciality work. Tommy Uluave, who was held out of action after transferring to USU last fall, and Long Beach City College transfer John Diebold are also in the race on the right side.
