If its a track meet with six inches of snow on the ground, better count on it. If youre a senior or sophomore and look anything like a just let Uncle John get on your trail and it wont be long before youre captured. If its a region championship that Uncle John wants, expect his troops to be battling right down to the last race for it. Yes, when it comes to track and field, there arent too many things that Coach John Flint of Clearfield cant get if he wants them bad enough. Flint has the Falcons as one of the favored teams to take the Region One championship this spring in prep track and field. But looking back, there havent been too many seasons the Clearfield spring teams havent been contenders. Where track is regarded merely as something to fill time at some schools in the state, Flint is admired by fellow coaches as one of the premier mentors and someone who takes the sport seriously from the day school begins until the day it ends. Hes already brought one region crown to the school and another could come their way this spring. Since the first day Flint took over the head coaching duties, there hasnt been a single school record in any track and field event that hasnt been busted at least once. pole-vaulte- r, The latest record to fall was that in the shot put. Junior Mark Carter, who is being considered a favorite around the region, shattered the school record with a toss of 54 feet 11 and 34 inches. Thats the longest official shot put throw ever by a Falcon. The old record was set back in 1966. Last week Mark cut his finger in an accident in a shop class, but coach and holder attendants say the is going to be alright. Others to battle Carter in the shot put include Tom Gobinett, Robbie Browning, Alan Holyoak, Tony Bayer, Kurt Walker, Clay Checketts, Jeff Kofed and Derwin Toleman. Strong in Discus Too Carter is also leading the way in the discus having already thrown 146 4' 2 inches. Coach Flint says his star will be up around 150 to 160 before the close of the season. Backing Carter in the discus event itiltl , 1' i new-recor- d GOOCH, has rarely been beaten this Spring in the 100 meter dashj He'll be a serious conender for the Region One title this Spring. Gooch was also a running back on the football team. Greg Boarden, Dave Czarneccki. Stacey Hopper, Kimber Houslev. Dave Townley and Jim Phillips. the region last year with a toss of over 178 feet, will be battling Moore for the title in region. Kevin Porter, the Falcons choice in the decathlon, is also a strength in the javelin. Others ready to contend in the event are Scott Bybee, Sean Williams, Karl Waller, The 200 meter will primarily involve the same individuals. The 1600 meters will be led by Rawn Swallow, Mike Lyons, Daren Randy Barker, Manuel Perez, Bret Peterson. Thorson and Doug Paskett.. Pole Vault Contenders Last years third place Region One finisher, Mike Narango, seerns to be Coach Flint's top contender in the pole vault this season. Hell have Robert Renya, Ed Lemmon, Dave Erickson. Scott Harrell, Greg Boren, Bill Kelly and Doug Thurell to also work with.. High jump this year will without little question be one of Clearfields stronger events. Jeff Gorringe, Troy Nye, Kevin Bitton, and Mike Fahnert will battle for Flint here. Sky View's Jon McKenna appears to be the man to beat in the high jump this year as he returns as the regions champion. I.eapersin Long Jump Clearfield is loaded with depth in the long jump and it may just be a matter of finding a blue chipper. Richard Hansen, Jeff Schofield. Walter Jureck, Richard Bouchard, and Chris Allison. Most of these runners already enjoyed a successful cross country campaign under Coach Scott Tennis, who is assisting Coach Flint with the team. 400 Meters The 400 meter race, some 8 feet short of the regular 440, will have Jett Niedhauser, Steve Cash. Tracy Pitkin, Mike Sophomore Brian Wright took first place in the schools first outdoor meet of the year with a leap of 19 feet 'a inch. Following close behind were Tracy Pitkin, Freddie Cook, Greg Boarden, Mark Parsons, Mark Stories, and Jim Phillips. This may be one of the strongest overall teams weve ever had at Clearfield, said Flint when looking back on the depth in the field events. "We've definitely got to develop some before we can win a region title though." Flint looks for Bonneville to be the team to beat but also feels every team in the region has improved over last year. Fahnert and Kevin Tracy. Dan Perkins, Robert Wilcox. Kyle Knighton, Alvin Hansen. Wendell Larsen. Mike Rhodes, Jeft Baldwin. Mike Kelly and Sean Connelly have the nod in the 800 meters competition The 3200 meters will be again led by Swallow and all the other 1600 meter runners. Relays appear to be another strong point on the Clearfield team. The 400 meter relay squad appears seemingly strong again after finishing second in the state last year. Two members of the second place squad return again in the likes of Tim Gooch and Steve Cash. Fred Cook and Brian Wright will also be members of that team The 400 Medley relay team could consist of Dave Czarnecki. Brian Jeft Wright, Greg Boarden. Niedhauser, Robert Wilcox and Dan Perkins.
