Lakers Nab Title Plenty of depth earned Bonneville their second straight title in mens cross country, but the surprise came with Craig Galloway of the Lakers finishing sixth after faltering down the homestretch. Craig, who the week before had made a strong City meet, had a showing in the Weber Country-Ogde- n huge lead on his opposition but was overcome with s exhaustion some yards short of the finish line. That falter enabled Tim Hunter of Sky View to pass Craig and go on to claim the individual championship in the boys event. Hunter finished with a time of 16:17. With Tom Hanselman of Bonneville finishing second in 16:22 and teammate Brent Sears finishing fourth 100-plu- . 1 . 1 979 Page 9 with a time of 16:27, the Lakers were able to claim the team title. Galloway made a courageous effort to make it to the finish line and ended up sixth in 16:54. Bonneville scored 38 points to 47 for second place Clearfield in the boys event. Weber finished third with 53, followed by Sky View with 94, Layton with 137 and Roy with 147. Tracy Fifield of Weber was the third place finisher with a time of 16:27 while Dan Perkins of Clearfield was seventh in the time of 17:00. Doug Kent of Bonneville was clocked in at 17:05 for 8th place. Lynn Godderidge of Sky View was ninth in the time of 17:07, while Mike Lyons of Clearfield rounded out the top ten in the time of 17:10. Meet officiator, Chick Hislop, who heads the Weber State cross country squad said Galloway ran his first mile way to fast. Craig was clocked at 4:38 for the first mile, which was much to fast for him. It was a courageous thing to see him finish the way he did though. As far as a team, Bonneville is superb in talent and in coaching. Neville Petermen layed the ground work for this team last year and Blair Martineau is continuing that tradition, said Chick. Weber High's Julie Jenkins raises her finger designating whose on top. Standing beside her is her father. Julie barely edged out Camille Davis to win the Women's Cross Country Championship last week ih Region One. THAT SAYS IT ALL JULIE! Everyone was hopeful to be a winner in last week's Region One Boys Cross Country Championships held at Weber State. Tim Hunter of Sky View eventually became the winner. A THEYRE OFF yaw AM-- |
