CLACK PresidsRl Davis County Bank 76 Free Estimates If youve been feeling the lure of Alaska lately, you should know that history may be repeating itself there. In August of f 181)6 was gold discovered in the Klondike. Seventy-two j j years later - in January, 1968 - oil was discover- at Prudhoe Bay on the North ed Slope of Alaska. Last summer, the first black gold began pouring I down through the L J The pipeline changed the face of the largest but least populated of the 50 states. And the infusion of money that came with it helped to keep Alaskas cost of living the highest in America. Working skilled workers schedules, typically earned $1,600 a week. . , the unskilled, $800. But today youll find that the great rush to earn pipeline wages has become a reverse tide. Just as the miners who swarmed to the Klondike 80 years ago seemed to disappear overnight, the wave of Alaska pipeline builders is receding right now. Did the gold rush to the Klondike and the oil rush to the North Slope really mean anything? Sure they did. Before the discovery of gold in the Klondike, Alaska was a territory thought to be useless as a horse. But the gold strike in the Klondike attracted our attention to this vast and varied land. The oil strike in Prudhoe Bay has again attracted our attention to Alaska, only more so. The pipeline was a monumental achievement. But its real importance is what it will do for the U.S. Eventually it will bring two million barrels of oil a day to the port of Valdez and on to the lower 48 -oil that is desperately needed to keep the United States from almost complete dependence on the Middle East. So the romance of Alaska is back in our thoughts if only as a matter of curiosity. Yet this may be a grand time to visit or vacation in Alaska -- its magnificent mountains, forests, and to see how history has waterways repeated itself there. seven-day-a-we- three-legge- d EZRA CLARK pipeline. Word of the gold strike in the forbidding Klondike area started a stampede just before the turn of the century. Over the next 50 years, the Klondike yielded about $200 million worth of the precious metal. News of the oil strike at Prudhoe Bay also fostered a rush to Alaska. In peak periods, 21,000 men and women were at work on the pipeline. From start-u- p to finish the job took almost three years. When this army of construction laborers, engineers, workers and countless others was done, the pipeline stretched 800 miles across Alaska. It was the greatest building project of modem times, costing more than $9 billion. T. IN THE LA YTON STORE ONLY! 200 WEST GENTILE PHONE: OPEN MON. 376-12- 93 f SAT. 8 TILL 6 USE YOUR CHARGE CARD |
