Show DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, JANUARY 19, 1978 WEEKLY REFLEX Falcons Facing Tosigh Game s By DAVE WIGHAM The next five days will go a long way in telling if the Clearfield team will indeed go undefeated in league play as many of their players have indicated. The Falcons now face the two teams closest to them in playing Roy and Officials: Gan You Tell Which Ones Do College Games? Weber. THE BIGGEST game of the year for Clearfield will take place Friday when they travel up north to take on the highly talented Roy club. Then on Tuesday they host the Weber team that is sitting on top of the league with the Falcons. Although the Warriors beat Roy, this reporter still maintains the Royals will be tougher for the Clearfield By DAVE WIGHAM "After watching a bunch of high school basketball games this year one thing stands out about the officials. You can tell the ones who do some college games. THAT WAS a comment from a high school coach, who for obvious reasons wishes to remain in the background. For the most part the high school coaches all agree. Their point is that the college game is different in that they want to play, mix it up a little. In high school the coaches want a game called close. The officials that work both college and high school tend to lean towards the college style and let people mix it up. example of that occurred last week in two different games. In the Bountiful and Clearfield game the officials, one of whom works college games, chose to let the players go after one another. The result was two fights and a black mark on the game. Then on Friday when Viewmont and Bountiful played the officials, again yone works college, called the game close and it was a good game. Had the Tuesday game at Bountiful been called the same way as the Viewmont game, there wouldnt have been any trouble. bunch. Before the year keys to his Brian Johnson. Brian missed basketball last year with a knee injury and his playing ability was in question going into the season. NO questions now as Brian is one of the premiere players in Region One. This ff senior center is averaging about 16 i points an outing for the Falcons. What about the knee bothering him, it isn't balls. Brian Johnson is definitely one of the main hand. One coach notes, "One night an official may work a college game and get anywhere from $50 to $100 for that game. Then the next night they work a high school game for $27. Some just dont get excited. Others think they are too good for high school after working the college reasons the Clearfield team is shooting for the league crown. He isnt the only reason though, Scott Wallace is pouring in points, 18 a game to be exact, while junior Russell Florence is adding 14 an outing. That makes the front line scoring at a 48 point per games. 7 THIS ISNT to say that all college officials that work high school games are bad. I know of a lot that work both and are good at both. But the coaches do have a good point in that some of the others are giving the good ones High school is not college, the games should be called tight. The college players are more skilled. High school players play a lot more with emotions, and those emotions can get away from them in a game that is allowed to III VOLLEYBALL RAGE By SANDRA GREEN Intramural volleyball is going strong at Davis High. The intramural program began at Davis Dec. 12. Volleyball is the first sport on the agenda, and will continue until Jan. 20. THE competition needed desperately to get back into state contention. Secondly, and more important, it proved to the Viewmont players they could win the close games. THE VIKINGS dropped some close have en- counters. One point losses to Roy and Clearfield and a three pointer at the buzzer to Layton. They were beginning to wonder if they would ever win. In fact during the week the players were talking to themselves and to one another. Coach Cleverly told them to believe in themselves, no one was to blame for the losses, they were team efforts. And it was a team effort that won the game last week. Now the Vikes can get right back in the thick of the race knows? VIEWMONT might not have found the leader they need yet, but they have found a scoring guard in Junior Jim Miller. This fiery little guard is averaging 15 points per game in his two previous varsity outings. Millers quickness and aggressive defense was a key in the ed club with Cordell Olsen and Robbie Neilson doing the scoring damage, in last weeks game these two both hit for 21 points. The Vikes should destroy the Bobcats up front with people like Hanks, Curtis, Yates and Hess. Then too there's Scot Eden, who came in and did a super job last By DAVE WIGHAM In the next five days the Bountiful basketball team can do a lot to get themselves in the state tournament in March. They can also dig themselves into a hole that they might never get out of. CURRENTLY the Braves are in a four-watie for the record. The cellar with a team in front of them is Lay-tomark and right with a in front of them is Roy with a 41 record. The Braves entertain these two teams in the next five days. If the Bountiful club expects to beat either of these clubs they'U have to play better than last Friday when they dropped a game against rival Viewmont. In that conn 2 Year Warranty HEYWOOD AUTO CLINIC 11 Wet, Kaysville 376-203- 5 front line should win the game. ON Tuesday comes the Bonneville club that everyone is still trying to figure out. The Lakers have some talent, they went through with only one loss. They like to run and gun and the Vikes can't afford to get in a running game with them. Mike Stagg and Kurt Child give the Lakers some muscle and size up front but they dont compare to the Vike talent. The n their standings are: BHSs Volfacs (Volunteer Beach Pros Faculty) 4-- , 4-- RusBums Marxists CCs sels Sprouts and Social Committee and Russell Rowdies 3-- 4-- 3-- 0-- Os guards like to Bonneville The next organized sport planned is basketball. Advisors to the intramural program are Coach John Dawson and students Jeff Starkey and Mike Harris. 3-- 3-- shoot the long range bombs, so does Viewmont, only difference is the Vikes have some good shooters. Coach Cleverly seems settled on his lineup with Miller at guard, along with Jones, Higley or Gil Hodges, the Vikes have too much talent, quickness and speed for the Lakers. OFFICIATING at the volleyball games are the members of the Davis High girls volleyball team. This is the first year for intramural sports at Davis. Time element was the main factor for not previously having the program. Now because of a 45 minute lunch, it is possible to play the intramurals. THIS activity stimulates school involvement, and also gives students something to do during lunch. The Lancers will have to stop the inside work of Irvy Williams and Pendleton while the Braves will have to guardline of Carl Woodward, Ben Bubak or Rick Snow. If Nelson gets the call hell go up against a Layton junior in Gordon Anderson, Pendleton will have his hands full with Rory Dixon while Williams will go up against Brandon Flint. The Braves' other two for- wards, Scott Crowther and Brian Slagowski are both becoming more offensive minded, could become a factor in this game. THE ROY contest shapes up to be big people against bigger people. The best match up in the league could very well be Jeft Sholtec of Roy against Williams These two know each other and it could be a classic confrontation. The Royals have a balanced club with Fred Fernandes, Kurt Bennington and Sholtec. The Roy center Is the leading scorer in the league and will be the key to this one. THE GAME Tuesday could bring the two undefeated clubs together for a showdown. Weber has surprised everyone in the league by beating a few folks they shouldnt have. They have a good club, Mark Montgomery, Steve Trawick and Ray Coleman are three of their stars. They say a sign of a good club is one who can win the close ones, both of these have. Clearfield, a one pointer over Viewmont and the Weber club, a couple over Bountiful and Roy. On paper the Falcons are better at almost every position, but somehow the Warriors have been beating superior talent. After the game with Roy, the Falcons could suffer a that would be trouble with Weber. If they can stay high for that second game then the Weber team is in definite trouble.
