Show -- DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. JANUARY 5. 1978 WEEKLY REFLEX "h Japanese Wrestlers r'l Take On Local Lads By DAVE WIGHAM Older Players Still Rlanags To Get Down The Court city-wid- MEMBERS OF the winning team were Gary Malmrose, Stan Jeppson, Jay Clarkson, Scott Naegle, Mark Nelson, Dave Riley, Chris Jones, Lee Holbrook, and Lynn Tucker. The week-lonaffair was a good one. Several people were upset at paying at the door and some at the officiating but all in all it was a great time by all. What tournament isnt upset at the officiating These officials should be congratulated and thanked, they took a lot less money than they usually get for games. g THE MONEY situation was simple. This was a fundraising project. The schools made some money for their athletic budget. Where else in this world could you watch three ballgames for $1 25. For the price, it was well worth it It was a great time to see old faces and friends again. Mr. Flake at Viewmont was having a great time taking money and greeting everyone at the door. Thats what the tournament was all about SOME OF those old players can still get up and down the floor with the youngsters. One could just see the strides in basketball that have been made over the years The old classes stuck to basics while the youngsters went radical complete with behind the back dribbles and slam dunks. It was easy to see why the schools have developed into basketball powers, they ha"e had some top notch players through the years. The city has come up with a trophy for the winners, it will hang in the Recreation Center wi.h the w'nmng class being engraved each year THIS YEAR the Bountiful Class of 72 goes on the trophy. Next year, who knows? Some of die teams say theyll be back stronger, and will even get together and practice before the tournament. It was a good week and tournament. Almost doubled the number of teams over last year. Next year promises to be even bigger and better. beginning at 7 THE Japanese team will be taking on wrestling teams throughout the state during the month so their stop in Layton is one of about 12 matches they have in Utah. This team is expected to win the majority of their meets since they are a select group consisting of the top wrestlers from their country. The American grapplers will undoubtedly have their work cut out for them to win. Plans are now being finalized for a return match in Japan this summer FOUR HIGH schools will be represented in the match. Clearfield has one wrestler, Viewmont one, Layton has four and Bountiful High has five for the January 9 encounter. Tournaments were C-lJU- THE FORWARD situation at Bountiful is still the key to their season. No question but that they need more scoring from their front line Scott Pendleton, the small forward, is a good shooter and he usually gets his share of the points. The problem stems from the other forward spot where either Scott Crowther or Brian Slagowski ojverates from. Both need to look for the shot more and both nt-to hit the boards hard The Braves should beat Bonneville on Friday The Lakers have a couple of guards that like to shoot long range, and a center that drives a lot Williams will handle the center, wh.le IN THIS match there are two matches at the 163 pound All-St- e- to Sky View, Chris picked up about five steals, he will need to penetrate and shoot to help keep some pressure off of Williams BOUNTIFULS Rich Grind-staf- f will go up against Hisashi Kudo in the 136 pound division. Rich has been the surprise of the Brave team, his coach notes that he improves each week. Clearfields junior sensation, Herman Martinez will battle Senchi Yayanagi at 138. Herman flew onto the wrestling scene last year when he captured the region title while only a sophomore. Hes even better this year. Junior John Luddmgton of Bountiful, will be matched up with Tokuichiroh Watnabe at 145. Luddington is vastly improved and has been a solid performer this season. At 156 Bountifuls Wade George will go against Hiromi iio. Wade has only dropped one match this year and is considered by many as a top wrestler. p.m. W THIS WEEK the Braves will have to keep their act together as they jump back into region battles with a game Friday at Bonneville and another next Tuesday at home against a very strong Clearfield club Big news in the Logan game was the balanced scoring for the Braves. In past games they have relied heavily on the scoring of their center naments this year and is one of the better grapplers in the state. Layton High on Monday, Jan. Another team has won the Alumni Tournament and has claimed bragging rights to the city for the coming year Bountiful class of 1973 entered the tournament and to no ones surprise won the Bountiful portion of the tournament. Then on Friday they took on the Viewmont e winners, class of 72, and won the tourney. Bountiful High basketball coach, John Robison had a very good week last week. First of all his club got a week off to nurse some injuries and iron out some bugs, and then at the end of the week his Braves got a big shot of confidence by completely destroying a Logan club. already won several tour- All-Sta- 9 Tsu-tom- u Ishu.
