I never thought of my kid as a person until just the other day. Even then, it took some doing. You see, it all started like this I was innocent, I swear! Okay, so it was gross. How was I to know? I was you notice the chocolate on their upper lips?) spit on their kids? Spit is the universal solvent! Spit is the 409 of the Mother Goose set! Everybody does it! ... So how come it made my kid throw up? following my animal I have never been so insulted in my life. One little loogie and he was off and running, retching all the I cleaned his face with spit. There. 1 said it. The horrible truth is out. The next time you see me you can point, way! It was more than this mothers heart could bare. My spit made him barf. Hes my son! Flesh of my flesh. Blood of my blood. Spit of my spit! He sprung forth, dripping wet, from my body! He has dripped wet ever since! I have changed countless foul diapers have wiped endless runny noses, and cleaned clumps of baby upchuck from my shoulders since the day he was born. Never once have I thrown sniff and whisper, There she goes! Thats her! She spits on her kid! No, now thats not quite true. I mean, I dont exactly spit on him. I spit on a rag. The rag goes on him. You know to wipe stuff of his face. Have a heart. I said it was gross. But I was in a pinch. No wipes handy. No soap, no water. Just spit. Right on the tip of my tongue. Now, am I right, or am I right? Do not all mothers, at one time of another (like on the way in to church when up. So all of a sudden hes four years old and his mothers spit isnt good enough for IDEA: BEACON SUBSCRIPTIONS A FUNDRAISING Are you looking for ways to raise money for your club or organization? It makes him sick? Rotten kid, I think to myself. But hold on a minute. I get to thinking about it. How would I like it if my mother showed up at my front door, glimpsed a smudge on my upper lip, and went to work on it. I pictured her spitting on the corner of her hanky and rubbing it into my face. I knew right there and then that Id upchuck on the spot. Get your spit off me!, Id yell. Thats disgusting! Nobody spits on me and gets away with it! Second-han- d spit is really repulsive. Not only does it smell like a compost heap in a state of full blown decay, it feels like slug slime. Spit on your own face, for crying out loud! What do I look like, a spittoon, for petes sake?! I have begun to sympathize with my little four year-ol- d Fauntleroy, who has finally stopped heaving. He emerges from the bathroom, having brought up an entire years supply of food. Poor kid. I try to explain. Mothers, I tell him, think they have certain rights. This includes the right the duty, even, of presenting their kids to the world, clean faced. It matters little how said face gets that way. Clean may come by way of Ivory it floats soap or by Mothers she spits Mouth. Spit has been pinch-hittin- g for soap and water for centuries. I would lay odds that King Tuts embalming fluid was 50 percent spit. His Mummys spit. But then, Tut was too dead to argue. My kid qrgues. So its never too late to learn. My kid is a bonafide person. The kind of person who does not like to be cleaned up with somebody elses spit! But Im his mother! Mother or not, he tells me, your spit still feels like slug slime! So I swallow . . . hard, and put a box of Wet Ones on my mental shopping list! Emma states that Roys history is different than that of all Roy started with the least and received the most, but at what a price! Roy was a desert, a dry surrounding communties desert without a drop of water, a blade of grass or a single tree a seemingly plain of lifeless sand. A trickle of settlers endure the bwest, the hardest and the barest of what Roy was, tearing a living from this soil. "Those first few tenants became a stream and then a river of people because they found means to quench the thirsty soil and to supply more iving richness to Roy than to any other surrounding community aknost overnight. Members and honorary Helpful hints ON THE Ever since a group of colonists in Plymouth Bay began to feel hemmed in Americans have been a people on the move. If youre ready to make your move, here are some hints to help it go more smoothly. If you have the choice, try to avoid moving during the summer rush and the rush at the end of each month. Thats when the heaviest demands are placed on the equipment and the personnel of moving companies. The earlier you advise the moving company of the date of your move, the more likely youll be able to , have your things moved on your preferred date. Try to give between four and six weeks advance notice if possible. To get an idea of the cost of the move, ask your moving company to have e its agent make a survey of your household goods. United Van Lines, one of the leading movers of household goods, points out that an agent will compute the approximate cost of the move and give you a written estimate at no charge. Remember, however, this is an estimate, not binding either on you or the company. pre-mov- The exact cost of your cant be determined until after your shipment has been loaded on the van and weighed. The basic transportation charges will depend on the actual weight of your goods and the distance they travel. move Moving companies offer services to make moving easier on you. For instance, for an extra charge at your request, you can have your goods packed and unpacked. Or, if you cant take immediate possession of your new home, most companies will store your things in a local warehouse till youre ready for them. For Mix together: teaspoon vanilla cup soft butter or margarine V4 cup orange juice 1 pound powdered sugar Spread over cookies while still warm, to make a glaze. xk V4 MOVE? mation more helpful inforon making your move, a free booklet, Answers to Questions About Moving, is available by writing: Bette Malone Consumer Services, United Van Lines, Inc., Dept. Grant is the man who pulled Mrs. Rex Brunker of Ogden from her smoke-fille- d home and saved her life three weeks ago. He was driving east on 2nd street on his way to work when he spotted the fire. How did you happen to notice her house was on fire? I asked. I always look for accidents or fires, he replied, explaining that he is always looking for a chance to help someone. Why do you call yourself Uncle Grant? I asked. I talk to a lot of different people, some of them only once or twice, he said. I want them to remember me. I thought you must be some kind of a friendly nut wheq you answered your phone that way, 1 told him. That describes me quite Grant laughed. well, There is never any doubt from the beginning. Grant claims that he has done everything he ever wanted to do except three things power hang gliding, jumping off Ben Lomond peak with a hang glider, and jumping off a cliff in with a parachute. It is almost 3,000 feet tall. I could freefall 1,000 feet before I had to open my chute. His wife, Sarah, shuddred. If he ever does that, it will be after our eight kids are grown, she said. Sarah said Grant keeps all the kids in the neighborhood entertained n during the Bummer with the jump tower he made. j Jean Shaw His jump tower is a real, parachute rigged on a cable which stretched across his yard. Nobody has to wonder where their kids are. Theyre always at our house, Sarah said. Grant also loves to cook. Im a fantastic cook! he claims. I have a good wife who enjoys making me happy, so she lets me cook and does up all the dishes. Grant says that he makes up his own recipes. Im a creator. When we have a party, Grant does the cooking, put in Sarah. One of his favorite tricks is to bake a chicken or turkey on a bed of shredded cabbage. He claims it gives the cabbage a fantastic flavor and makes the bird really moist and good. Grant also likes to make full-size- d with a pulley his own noodles for soups, and claims the trick to making good soup is to spice it right. If your kids dont like onions, put in a whole onion or two. Then you can lift them out after the flavor is cooked in and they will never know, he suggests. He has a favorite salad he would like to make. I wish I could find someone to finance it, he said wistfully. in sauted He puts mushrooms and onions with hot croutons. It also calls for Iranian pistachios, which are unavailable now. California grows good avocados, but their pistachios arent near as flavorful as the Iranians, he said. I really doubt that very many people would forget Grant Larson, no matter what he called himself! Yosemite National Park Quimby, Russell 239 RathJen.Paul By Carol GRANT LARSEN, also known as Uncle Grant, demonstrates his technique for preparing home-mad-e noodles. |
