His precious yellow and Kicky white Tabby had been missing for three days. It wasnt unusual for him to go off visiting the neighbors, or exploring in the orchards surrounding Ricky's house. Tuffy was an adventuresome cat. But he had always announced bedtime with a loud authoritive Meow! at the back door. He would wisk inside, impatiently nagging Ricky !o get into bed so he could curl up beside him on his favorite blanket. But one night Tuffy didnt come home. Ricky stood by the back door in his pajamas calling him until 9 oclock, w'hen his mother made him go to bed alone. When he woke up in the morning, he reached over to pat the soft warm animal. Then he remembered. He dressed hurriedly and ran down the stairs from his An adventuresome cat attic bedroom, which was directly over the living room. I dont have time for breakfast, Mom, he said. Ive got to go find Tuffy. Ricky, you just sit down here and eat. You will have plenty of time to look for that cat later, Mother said firmly. Please, Mom, Ricky pleaded. Maybe Tuffy has been hurt. Ive got to find him. Tell you what, Mother softened a little. You eat and get your bed made while I fix Daddys lunch, and Ill help you look. After breakfast Ricky and Mother looked all over the neighborhood, but no one had seen the cat. Mother tried to reassure him. Im sure he will show up, Ricky, she said, You have to have faith. So Ricky did his chores, ate, slept and played with one car listening for a familiar "Meow. The next morning at breakfast Ricky announced, I dreamed about Tuffy last Poetry corner: ! him Mother decided to spend the afternoon weeding the flower garden by the living room. Violets and Lily of the Valley were nestled under the bushes surrounding a large chimney. The chimney was the first thing they noticed when they had first seen the house, many years before. They hoped it indicated a fireplace flashlight, summoning people to bring this and that to him. Soon all the neighbors gathered to .watch, mocking good naturedly that he ought to call a fireman before he fell down the chinmey, too. Daddy tied the corners of Tuffys special blanket with 2 pieces of sturdy rope, crossing them in the middle. Jan. I; Chris will Canada mission. But Rick said, No. He hadnt given up hope yet. He might have, except every night he had those dreams that he could hear Tuffy calling, just outside the window. He Ihen tied a long piece of rope to where the rope met. He lowered this down the chimney. Tuffy CLIMBED ON IT. The blanket formed sort of a basket as he started to pull up. But the frightened cat jumped off. Daddy hollered more instructions to Ricky, who ran into the house. He reappeared with a package and a fishing pole. He climbed the ladder to the roof and handed the things to his dad. Daddy took a fish from the package and hooked it to the fish line. He lowered it down toward the hungry cat, stopping just out of his reach. The starving cat leaped for the fish, landing on the blanket.. Rick, you pull on this rope to lift out the cat while I reel this fish just out of his reach to keep him terested. Lets hope he is hungrier than he is afraid. A few moments later, the neighbors cheered as Ricky the skinniest, hugged blackest, yellow and white cat in North Ogden. was in the living room. But no, it was just a chimney that led to nowhere. It had been used for a wood burning stove long ago, but now it was used for nothing. As mother began digging around the flowers, she heard a weak muffled cry. She stopped, listening. Were her ears playing tricks on her, too? Or could Tuffy be trapped in the chimney? She called, Here, Tuffy, and was rewarded with frantic meowing. It WAS coming from inside the chimney! Apparently poor Tuffy had fallen while exploring. He was probably starved half to death by then. In a few minutes Daddy was on the roof peering into the dark passage with his Receives Dairyman reaches 80th mission call Impossible Dream I night, I though he was crying right outside my bedroom window.
