Show Cook relives case experience (Editor's Note: Recently, the principal at Clearfield High School, Mr. Lawrence Code was asked to relate one of his most inspiring sports experiences. This could either be something he had personally been involved with or something he had witnessed. Other members of the Women's Alumni Included Kerry Fenwick (1974), Chris Thomock (1977), Janet Beene (1979), Carl Demonge (1971), Annette Johnson (1980), Kandee Edwards (1980), Jan Kahn (1974), Marta Aardema (1 974) and Cathy Mordue (1979). Returning starters from lat season's team include S 4 guard Mecheil Fowden, 5'7" guard Panny Wanberg and 4'1" center Jenny Wilkening-a- ll juniors. Wanberg was the second leading scorer for the lady Wildcats last 1978-7- 9 year with a 1 3.7 per game point average. Also returning from the squad ore Gndy Carlson, 5'8" senior forward, and 5'8" junior forwards for the upcoming season are Jodi DeRochey and Mary Maruri. Even though this is his first year as the principal of Clearfield, Cook claims hes been a Falcon fan from way back. Mr. Cook comes to Clearfield High from North Davis Junior High where he served as principal. The Norsemen last season enjoyed one of their finest seasons in many years on the winter hardwoods. When asked what was his favorite or most inspiring . . sports event, Mr. Cook related the events that took place in Clearfields overtime victory with Viewmont last season. Coach Craig Hansen, last seasons coach who is back again this season related the experience, "The score was 7 with 15 seconds left in the game. Viewmont had the ball, and was stalling for the final shot when Larry Read stole the ball and called time out. I had the team set up a special play for Russ Florence, but he was so well covered that he couldnt get a shot off so he passed back to Larry. With one second left, Larry shot with the ball in the air and the buzzer sounding. The ball split the net and Clearfield had a victor and Larry had his first two points of the night. Mr. Cook also remembers back in Clearfields sports state history to the thrilling moment in the 1974 baseball playoffs. He says that baseball game tops all others as Curt Christensen pitched 17 innings and helped lead his team to a 1 victory. Mr. Cook also wont forget the thrilling moments when..' the Clearfield High girls won the State Track Championship in 1978 and the state basketball crown in 1977. He also had fond memories of last years Region One gymnastics championship team. Sporfsfoculor nt ireso" Calif., was named to the First Team, Offense. Mitch Lawrence, St. Maries, freshman wide receiver who scored three touchdowns against College of Eastern Utah for Ricks, was named to the First Team, Offense, with Halgren and Roberts. On the First Team, Defense, with Curtis, were two other Vikings, Kelly Evans, tackle from Bountiful, Utah, and Steve Owen, defensive back from Salt Lake City. Owen, prior to a mission, played fullback for Ricks, and was changed to defense this season. Other First Team, Offense, players were Ben Bubak, Gary Allred, punter, Nathan Reid, kicker, Dan Shailand Mike Howard, offensive quarterback, line, Dave Larsen, receiver. The Dixie Rebels placed thes players. ..Snow placed Dav Dansie, Mike Montgomery, oi fensive line, Scott Applegate, receiver, and Ricky Cross, running back. On defense Dixie had Doug Snell and Bob Barrera, lineman, Wayne Kittrell, linebacker, Sam Gray, defensive back. Snow lists Marty Mendenhall, Jerry Browne and Kenny Stratton, linebackers. Ron Graham of College of Eastern Utah was listed as a defensive back. The Vikings placed four men on the Offense Second Team, Mark Halgren of Charlo, Mont., and Dan Hegerhorst, Dayton, Idaho, linemen; MikeSchiess, Rexburg, receiver, and Dave Hansen, Concord, Calif., quarterback. of the Hegerhorst, Ricks team with Dale Halgren, is the only sophomore. On defense Ricks named Dan in Smith from Roy, Utah, as linebacker, and Rick Berry, Sait Lake City, defensive back. College of Eastern Utah placed two men on the Offense Second Team and four on the Defense. Dixie placed two on the offense and two on the defense. Snow had one player on Offense and three on defense. Ricks placed third in the conference race with a 3-- 3 record. The tournament was won by Mt. Hood, the host school. There were five district winners competing in the regional tournament to name the team to go to Miami and the national championships...ju-nio- r volleyball college women teams that won regional tournaments throughout the country. Four teams advanced to the finals after a round-robi- n of play in Gresham. In the tournament Ricks defeated North Idaho, Judson Baptist Junior College and Chemaketa and then lost to Mt. Hood in the final match. :"Ricks won the first game 16 to 14 agaipst Mt. Hood and then lost 12 to 15! and 6 to 15. Coach JoAnn Reeve said the ML' Hood team began gaining momentum and our girls tried hard and did well, but just couldnt stop that momentum.
