Show Sporfsiacular Thursday, November 29, 1 979 Pag 19 toipos Aw sigjsioDU . The 1978-7-9 prep basketball season in Region One will long be remembered for the crop of d cage stars. Weber was represented in that list of stars with its own Mark Montgomery. Montgomery has moved on now, but not without leaving a footprint that will take a while to be overshadowed. For three years the Warrior cage great started for Coach Dick Connolly and it may seem odd for a while without him in the picture. But this years Weber Warrior picture of winter basketball will be anything but dismal even without Montgomery. Connolly has seven seniors, seven juniors and two sophomores that know their basketball and know how to i;sNi multi-talente- win. Weber kicked off their season last Friday at Skyline High School and were to battle East this Wednesday of this week. This Friday the Warriors will travel again,, jhis time to Orem. n The schedule gets 'even thicker with the Laker Classic scheduled for December 7 and 8th at Bonneville. Three of Connollys seven seniors appear in the likes of three guards, Kevin Jensen, Ralph Anderson and Steve Shaw. The veteran Weber coach felt a team needed three strong guards with all the pressure defenses. pre-seaso- Anderson has much improvement in several areas according to Connolly. Ralphs strong points seem to be his shooting in the area, taking the ball to the bucket on fast breaks, and ability to work hard in practices and games. Jensen is what Coach Connolly likes to call the cement of the team. He is a team player, a good passer and is a taller guard at that can rebound well. 6-- 0 Steve Shaw provides good shooting ability. Shaw is a careful player who admits that if he were a bit more aggressive he might be a better player. Coach Connolly agrees with him but likes the stability Shaw offers. The remaining four seniors are COACH DICK CONOLLY is all smiles while standing Kory Kennington (right) and Drew Skeen (left). The for another n pre-seaso- contest with next to top basketball players, Warriors travel to Orem this Friday night two of his the Tigers. Drew Skeen, Van Fuller, Kory Kennington and Neil Miller. Skeen, along with Fuller and Anderson saw some varsity action as juniors, but that was limited. In the past he has had problems shotting off balance but has improved. Coach Connolly claims he is in much better shape and has improved on his defensive skills. Fuller is a good outside shooter. Teams in Region One that plan to play a zone defense against the Warriors had better keep an eye out for Fuller. Miller is one who likes to make things happen fast and Coach Connolly will use him as a solid sixth man. Kennington is described as a smart player who has improved on his speed. Kory sometimes comes in first in team races, said Connolly who claims that is an improvement over past years. In some ways you could probably call this a rebuilding, year, even though we will have five seniors out there instead of a few juniors. The seniors have seen very little varsity action, we should be considered a very young team in some senses, said the Warrior coach. The seven juniors include Kelly Johnson, Scott Burton, Kurt Larsen, Wade Beus, Roger Graves, Bob Kill and John Salvo. The two sophomores that Connolly has high hopes for are Brian Coleman and Mark Combe. Johnson and Burton are big Both are rugged forwards at type players who can shoot well 6-- 3. inside. Larsen is aggressive inside and still growing at Wade Beus and Roger Graves both come into the Warriors basketball program with well developed skills who took the positions of some other hopefuls. Coach Connolly feels that Salvo and Kill will aid the program with nipre experience. Coleman is a good penetrating guard and Combe is the best shooter of the two. Both are 9 guards. Expects Sky View to be strong 6-- 1. 5-- Without Coach question, Connolly, who has served as the head coach of Weber High basketball teams for 12 years, feels that Sky View will have the team to beat in the 1979-8- 0 basketball season. The Bobcats have three players who have seen a load of varsity action in the past wtui Jon McKenna the standout. Connolly feels that Region One doesn't have a player like Montgomery last season who could average 10 rebounds a game and score consistently in double Figures, with perhaps McKenna the exception. Connolly,, who has coached a total of 18 years at Weber High, feels that Bonneville should be the next bet to Finish high in the league but feels the battle for third, fourth and Fifth will be the real thing to watch.. , Connolly has guided two of his past teams to seventh place rankings in state ahd in 1971 his . Warriors claimed the state championship. He will be assisted by Hal,jtaiyis who will coach the sophomores and Brian Gladwell who will assist in varsity duties. |
