Show Sporfstocular Page 8 Until recently say, the last ten years it would be stretching it to say that BYU had a winning football tradition. It was hard-noseit was competitive; but more often than not there was difficulty in staying on the winning side. Actually, the game was part of campus life at the turn of the century in Provo, but a fatality brought its discontinuance. It was not adopted again until 1922 as part of the schools ind, program. tercollegiate Take away three more years during World War II when football was suspended, and you have a total of 52 years of football history. In its first 50 years the Cougars have had a total of 11 coaches and played over 500 games. The Cougars have not been able to claim any undefeated seasons, but there were some highlights. The Ott Romney team of 1932 posted an 1 season, and the 8-- first Cougars championship conference came fairly recently under Tommy Hudspeth in 1965. The greatest movement forward, however, has come under the Cougars current coach, LaVell Edwards. In 1974 the Mountain Cats captured the WAC title and made their first bowl appearance, the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix. In 1976 the Cougars tied for the championship and were league ' invited to participate in a second bowl, the Tangerine in Orlando, Fla. At the end of the 1977 season they were again WAC champions and traveled to Japan for an appearance in the Silk Bowl in led the nation in punt returns and two NCAA kick-retur- n records in 1969. Kick-returwere also the specialty of Golden who topped Richards (1970-71)the nation in punt returns (1971). Richards is still listed with four existing NCAA kick-retur- n records. Seven years ago Fleet Pete was the VanValkenburg ( 1970-7nations leading rusher, setting several WAC and school records in the process. Pete was named to second and third team selections and played n in three games. Linemen of special note in recent seasons include defensive end Jeff Slipp (1969), offensive guard Gordon Gravelle (1970), Tokyo. Last year the Cougars won an outright WAC . crown and inaugurated the annual Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif. Historically, when talk turns to the individual stars that have come out of BYU, theres quite a bit to talk about. A few have won honors, participated n in games or earned a spot in the NCAA record book. Those of recent vintage include Eldon The Phantom" Fortie (whose number 40 jersey has been retired) who was named to selections several set 0, 2) post-seaso- post-seaso- Forte, a single-win-g tailback, was among the national leaders in total offense for that in 1962. year. More recently, quarterback won a Virgil Carter ((1964-66- ) host of honors as an outstanding player from BYU. During his tenure with the Cougars, Carter set three . and offensive lineman Paul Howard (1972). Four years ago the Cougars had two top defensive linemen in Wayne Baker and Paul Linford. Three years ago the Cougars had two outstanding major offensive records. One of those NCAA marks most yards rushing and passing in one game (599 against UTEP) still stands. In all, Virgil accounted for 6,354 yards total offensive and was responsible for a total of 698 touchdowns in his three-yea-r career with the Cougars. Carter was also named to the Academic selection for two seasons. One of Carters favorite targets who was Phil Odle (1965-67- ), ranks among the top receivers in touchdown catches. Phil ended his career with a total of 181 receptions for 2,548 yards and 25 touchdowns. For a while it looked like Nielsen may have been headed for Hiesman honors, but he suffered a knee injury in the fourth game of the campaign (Oregon State) and was out for the rest of the season. and Orrin Olsen, both of whom won national notice. Linemen of more recent note include Dave Hubbard (1976), Mekeli Ieremia (1977), Gary Petersen (1977), and Lance Reynolds (1977). Five years ago a young BYU sophomore, split end Jay Miller, led the nation in pass receptions (100) and caught more passes in one game (22) than any player in the history of the game. The following year, and the year after, quarterback Gary Sheide was runner-u- p for the NCAA passing crown. Gifford Nielsen, a homespun all-arou- athlete, (468 ' yards). Latest of the schools great is backs Todd running Christensen, a four-ye(1973-76- ), garnered some of the quarterback honors that eluded Carter and Sheide. During the 1976 season Nielsen established his own realm, leading the nation in touchdown passes for the season (29) and single game (5). Other single game marks that Neilsen paced for the nation were in rushing-passin-g (455 yards) and passing let-term- ar at fullback. Christensen led the Cougars in pass receptions for three seasons (1975-77). BYU can claim five Western Athletic Conference championships (outright or shared); 1965, 1974, 1976, 1977, and 1978. BYU Rainbows . play Cougars Friday . carried the ball only nine times, PROVO Hyaii, a team but had 73 yards and one touch- everybody likes to play on the (or his efforts. A capacity crowd of more than 30,000 is expected Friday night for the 7:30 kickoff. Coach Dick Tomeys club is playing only two road games this season, one in Provo and the other in El Paso, Tex. And since both are WAC games, the outcome for the Rainbows is considered significant. Hawaii had a 1 record last weekend before dropping a 1 decision to Nevada-La- s Vegas in Aloha Stadium last Saturday night. Thus they will bring a 2 record into Friday nights contest with the undefeated Cougars. The week before, the Rainbows dropped New Mexico down a notch, beating them 20-- 3 in a game considered an upset by most experts. BYU is coming off a 31-- 7 win over Texas-E- l Paso, although there were times in the first half of the game when it appeared the Cougars were in a position to be upset by the Miners. The score was 10-- 7 at the half before the Cougars were able to get rolling offensively. Once ' again it was BYUs passing that covered most of the yardage. The nations leading passing team (323.5 yards per game) surpassed its average in the win over the Miners, but only ' . 48-3- regarding explanation the penalties.
