Show i Sporrstaculor Ihoimoired as Utialh's September 27, 1979 Page 9 MiDDer top femnaDe coDDegnate stair On Wednesday, September 26th, Kathy Miller, who has starred at Weber State the past four years, was honored as the top Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year by the Utah Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis National Society. While at Weber State, Kathy was for four consecutive years in both basketball and softball, as well as an nominee and leading scorer of the Intermountain Athletic Conference in basketball. Bobby Clampett of Brigham Young was named as the Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year and Jan Smith, football coach at Morgan High School, was named as the Champion of the Year. During Millers career at Weber State, she amassed e a total of 2,745 points for a 27.5 average and a total of 1,296 career rebounds. Miller was recently a first round draft pick for the Milwaukee Does of the Womens Professional Basketball League and will report to rookie camp on October 7. In softball, Kathy had a .423 average in conference play and hit.375 overall. Coach Fern Gardner of the University of Utah has said, Kathy is consistently a high scorer and truly one of the finest shooters in womens basketball today. No matter how you defend her, she will still find a way to score over 25 points. Margie McDonald, coach at the University of Wyoming has stated in the past, I have watched Kathy play for three years and every time we play at Weber State, we try to come up with some way of controlling her scoring and rebounding. She Just goes ahead and does her thing anyway. Kathy is probably the purest shooter I have ever seen and is a fine overall per-gam- athlete." Coach Dan Ayala, University of Nevada at Las Vegas said, We have been unable to stop her. She scored at will against us. Kathy Miller is one of the most outstanding players we played against last year. Finally, Coach Neil McCarthy of the Big Sky Con- ference Champs, Weber State, said, Kathy Miller is one of the finest female athletes in the United States. Her outstanding basketball skills and tremendous competitiveness make her a bona fide As a freshman at WSC, Miller was an star, was the leading scorer and rebounder of the Intermountain Athletic Conference and was nominated as Kodak candidate from Region 7. As a sophomore, she was again She nominee from the IAC that was the only year while leading the league in scoring, was second in free throw percentage, and sixth in rebounding. That same season she had a single game high of 47 points against BYU and 50 points in a game against Utah State. Her junior year at WSC the honors continued to roll in. She was an player, nominated 7 Team, named to the Kodak was a finalist for the Wade Trophy, symbolic of the best woman basketball player in the nation, was the ICAs leading scorer, was third in rebounding, and was invited to try out for the 1978 Womens U.S. University World Games Team. These same honors came to her in 1979, except that she made a tryout for the National Womens Team in Games rather than the World Games. Coming Up The Lady Wildcat tennis team opens their 1979 fall schedule at home on October 6 when they host a doubleheader match against New Mexico State University and the University of New Mexico.
