I know the football season is right on top of us but lets talk basketball for a moment. Just when Salt Palace workers were planning how to ride shot radius line, the the basketball court of the three-poiNBA board of governors had decided to allow its teams to try the features hot for a year, maybe two. The three-poiplay, reminisent of the ABA era, wont be anything different to Utah fans, who used to be charmed by the shot made by the Ron Boones, Glen Combes, and others. Now that the Jazz (formerly of New Orleans) are in Utah, the three-poin- t play will once again be relived. Franklin Mieuli of the Golden State Warriors has called the three-poiplay a destruction of basketballs concept, a tradition and a separation from the from a departure main body of the game. In other words, he doesnt like it and to register his protest, resigned from the NBA board of governors. a piece of gimmickry leading to Is the three-pointruination? The first recorded suggestion for adding a point to a shot taken outside 25 feet was made by Howard Hobson, coach of U. of Oregon, in the 30s. The man who made it go, however, was the late Abe Saperstein when he formed the American Basketball League in 1961. Saperstein was a showman, promoter, and visionary, they all say. Through my study of when he was owner of the Harlem Globetrotters, he was the first to predict that black athletes would dominate basketball. But Ive found there are those that disagree with Mieuli besides myself. One such is former referee, Gene Moyers, who presently lives in California. In a recent press release he stated, "Mieuli is but hes all wrong about spoiling the concept of the game. The bonus shot is not only effective but its dramatic. Watch the reaction of the fans this season when the referee holds up one hand, indicating the shot was taken outside the circle, and then both hands if it goes in. Its like a touchdown.. "It will revise strategy, loosen the defense ancf in fact, bring on better technical basketball. It will also allow the small man to be competitive. The three-poiplay is no more departure from the fundamental game than other changes-t- he widened lanes, the clock, the period, the offensive foul rule and long ago, the elimination of the center jump after every score. "Look at football. The colleges have a great idea by offering a two point option on a conversion. Another to comment was Kevin O'Shea, former San who shot the Franciscan and Norte Dame three-poishot in the old ABL. He said, "I know what Mieuli is saying," Shea responded, r wont solve the NBA's problems. The but the shot has an element of excitement but won't change the end result because the best team will usually win. The team that has to go to outside shooting is usually trying to catch up. "I didn't like the three pointer in our league because it created an imbalance in team play. Guys would stand still waiting for that long sltot In basketball you must keep moving or you're not a team player. nt ar i 25-fo- three-pointe- in the Weber High Booster Club and Pot Whittemore tor The club is presently seeking memberships some attractions.
