It was especially serious along the North Bench area, where construction going on left the ground bare. Robert Ward, representative from Lake View Heights, said some of the natural drainage channels further to the East were eroded, sending in heavy water run off through the construction sites. Their neighbors to the West, the Tom Conners family, wound up with several inches of mud in their garage. Many other people were effected by the storm. All over the city there are still signs of flooding with a lot of sand bags here and there. But the worst part of the flooding seemed to be centered along the North Bench. Weve been here a month and weve been flooded out twice, said Isabelle Connors. Its rather a discouraging way to start out. She said there was a hole under their sidewalk so deep that her husband put his arm in, up to his elbow. Mr. Wangsgard said, We have not been oblivious to the problems caused by the lack of adequate storm sewers. We know the problems and the answers. What we lack is money. He explained the city is working on a storm sewer plan as the city grows and funds become available. It is coordinated with the countys master storm sewer plan. The county wide flood control plan for the bench lands will take 15 years before it is fully implemented, explained Mayor Eldon McColley. Mayor McColley said the citys main problem was one of priorities.
