This is the first time Weber has ever won the state trophy in drama and the second time the new school has won a state championship. ! Again cooly and calmly. ..Right On! 22 Schools Competing 1 twenty two schools, in competition, the Weber team was hoping for at least a sixth place finish to better their last year finish. In three breaths of air, this is how it was told: We were sitting in the back of the room and they said they were going to announce the top ten, finishers, they got to third place ... with seventy nine points.. ..Alta, at this time the Weber team was jumping up and down thinking they had a least taken a place in the top three, we have improved so much from last year.. .second place with point- eightyeight .Cottonwood. ..then the Weber High kids yelled and screamed thinking they had placed first place (which they had) and we were jumping up nd down and Cottonwood was jus below us and Randy Mcoppin threw Out of Tammy Critchlow into the Cot- tonwood seats and they looked up at us and gave us a dirty look and then they said..in first place., with eightynine we points. ...Weber High School-the- n really went crazy cheering on Cottonwood for taking second place and then we cheered ourselves and then Mr s. Mckeen just sat there in a daze nd we went crazy and yelled until everyone went home. That minute by minute commentary was given by Lar ry Thompson, a humorous reading stat e champion. Was She Happy? Mrs. Mckeen (mom as they call her ) was overjoyed to say the least. Itss very difficult to take even a superior in state, the competition is so keen she said. Its just that they are great, there is no two ways its a hard fight to get a superior, and it take first pla ce in state is unbelievable, well, its a d ream come true, we went fifteenth, to eleventh to eighth to fifth co first, since Ive been working here, that na t! We've been working hard at it for six: years and thev'rejust super! she added. I have some super student teacher in Cindy Butakopher and Mindy without them, Thompson, b3)ir i iron (si they,...we..well, they are just super too! they have been a great help said Mckeen. The Weber team has been so super all year long. They won the Weber Invitational, they won the Skyview invitational (they had minor complications with some judges at that meet) and placed second in the Region meet. All those that didnt go to state also helped the team too. They helped by letting the team have some compition at school. Mrs. Mckeen was often heard telling the students that the hardest competition was there at More than 32,000 elk permits were in 1978 for the states open bull soason, and 2,923 bulls were harvested f r a nine percent hunter success. This is up one percent over 1977. In a ddition, 2,020 restricted elk permits were issued through the drawing and 1 ,088 bulls, cows and calves were harvested. Archers took 82 elk during sold 1978. He said the deer take, especially in some southern areas, was down nearly 50 percent due to poor access on opening day. More than 63,000 deer were harvested during Utahs general season for a 33 percent success ratio Muzzleloaders harvested 193 deer in 1978, slightly fewer deer than in 1977. The Skyview catcher then flung his arms in discust knowing he had missed him. The umpire during the whole play was standing behind the catched and was blocked in his view. Shaw was called out and the Skyview bench rolled with laughter. The Umpire had obviously made up his mind before the play had happened. He was in no position to make the call. There are other examples, but time and space do not permit. Its a very unfortunate thing, Hobbs pitched a super came, but he still lost the game. He had so much speed on the balls the Skyview team was swinging at air. Although Weber lost the game, (on the scoreboard only) they played a terrific game, in both instances and should be congratulated. Skyviews third baseman catches it on the ground and throws it to second to start the double play. He then throws it too high for the second baseman to catch. So the second baseman then jumps to catch it Knowing that he hasnt got a play at second, he throws it to first. He too overthrew it and the firstbaseman had to chase it after it went out of play Hobbs then advanced to home and Scadden to third. After the excitement had died down, they later learned that the umpire had called Hobbs out at second. The second baseman then laughed at the ump under his breath, he knew what had happened. Because of this, Weber forfieted one, possible two runs. Another example: Steve Shaw was all alone on third base,. The Skyview pitcher then threw a wild pitch. When the catcher scrambled for the ball, Shaw was coming home. The umpire didnt move a muscle. He stood there and watched it as entertainment.
