Utah athlete back with Rockefs; enjoys traveling with pro circuit Former University of Utah great, Mike Newlin, is once again back, in the for the much imstarting line-u- p proved Houston Rockers. Hes one of many Utah home grown athletes who are making it big on the pro sports circuit. For five years they started in the Houston Rocket backcourt together, comprising one of the most explosive guard combinations in the game. Calvin Murphy and Mike Newllin were consistently good for 48 to 50 points a game, though the Rockets lost much more frequently than they won in those early years. coachs link on the court, said Newlin. I try to be an extension of him, I try to be his hands out there. "A coachs hands are really tied once the game begins. He can drill you and drill you, but once the whistle blows, all he can do is sit back and watch, he cant stop the game and give a lecture. TM IN A position on the court where I have to know exactly what he wants. The play starts from this position. Hes got to have a player who knows what he is thinking. Newlin really is the most effective man for the job, if his playmaking skills measure up. For one thing, a strong leader is needed at that mothballs, Murphy has had a lot of guard partners the last three years. For a while John Lucas was the other starter. Then Robert Reid was given a chance, followed by Slick Watts, Mike Dunleavy, and even Rick Barry for a game. But now, as the season enters the home stretch, guess who is back home at starting guard? Mike Newlin. NEWLIN HAS had to retool his game Whoever totally. plays Murphy has got to be a playmaker, since Nissalke sticks rigidly with a point guard offense. When you have a shooter with the Midas touch of a Murphy, you dont waste his talents by mnking him into a passer. Therefore, those chores are inherited by the other guard. You don't often find a 5 player who can handle the passing and playmaking duties, but Newlin hnd either to learn or forget about ever being a starter again in Houston. He has acquired those talents now, and Nissalke returned him to the starting lineup recently. The Rockets immediately went on a binge in which they knocked off Portland and Denver on the road and had a fourth quarter lead at Seattle before stumbling and losing late in the game. What I am trying to be is the alongside The last three years, however, destiny has taken them down opposite paths. For Newlin, it has been a nightmare of injuries, life on the hen a sag in confidence and a 8-- Ireakdown at times in personal rapport with Coach Tom Nissalke. For Murphy, it has been business as usual. He may own the finest shooting touch in the game, and Nissalke has given him a chance to exploit it, especially last season when a rash of injuries reduced the Rockets to one scoring threat-Calvi- n Murphy. Newlin is a natural since he has played eight years, all for the Rockets, and he has the overwhelming respect of all his teammates. And defensively, a tall man is almost an absolute necessity at the position since Murphy is always going to take on the shorter guard. Murphy, of course, continues to be one of basketballs most consistent players as he winds up his ninth season. Hes had to listen to the position jjoSDD Girls Stacy Hansen: 1st, tumbling adv. A lot of people waste their time trying to do that, lie's difficult to post (take low and shoot over), hes awfully quick and he can steal the ball and be gone. He has the ability to embarass people. You might think Murphy loved it last year when every shot was planned for him, but it was a most unpleasant experience, he says. That was a terrible job. I either shot us into the game or shot us out of it. People like Newlin are responsible for his point production, Murphy says and people like his new teammate, Rick Barry.
