By Gary Toys In the Ogden Valley, its that time again, time for the climax of the basketball season, time for the Valley Tournaments. You might ask; what the &?&! are the Valley Tournaments? Any Valleyite" will tell you it is the oldest continuous tournament in the state, at any level, college to community. In the Valley, its a major happening! la the Beginning It all started back in 1930. The snow was deep and the Valley residents were restless. So a couple of guys got the idea to break the winter doldrums. Although breaking the monotony was a good reason to have a tournament, putting on a good show for a good looking girlfriend was probably the main motive! The LDS Eden Ward cultural hall had just been completed a few years before and they had an ideal playing floor. There were four teams from Huntsville, two teams from Eden, and two teams from Liberty, making an eight team tournament. The game wu different then, they had a center jump ball after every basket. This resulted in very low scoring games. This rule was later changed in the early 40's. This rule, however, didn't hinder the competition. It was always tough. Because of the depression, a Civilian Conservation Corps was based in the Valley. It wu a work help project to aid young men that were unemployed. Becauselhey were living in tne Valley, they woe eligible to participate. One Valley resident Homer Brunker, remembers, One young man went up for a layup and wu undercut. When he came down he was knocked cold. His friends dragged him off to the side, out of the way and sent someone Mu in for him I They sure played rack ball. They used to get mad at our reforou Parley and Ray Hancock. Along wish our fine looms, many fine individual players have come from the tournaments, both famous MIKE OLSEN Nancy Qhen. was she recognusd lor Mi sennet to the team. All played on the state championship team at Weber High. Growing tournament The tournaments have grown. What once was an eight team tournament, is now a nineteen team tournament What once was played on two or three nights, is now played six nights with five games a in all. night, twenty-fiv- games e :-- - MX- A f So you say you want to play in the Valley Tournaments? Sorry, Charley I If you're not a resident of the valley you cant participate on the floor. But that doesn't have to stop you from participating on the sidelines. There are many super teams and players to thrill any basketball fan. Once, (believe it or not) a college scout was spotted at some of the games, (what he wu doing we dont know). Its been said the Valley Tournaments are scheduled so late in the year because they would seem anticlimactic to the NCAA tour 825-166- naments! So if Tonight youve got a spare night and you are still hooked on basketball, make a short trip up to the Valley and come and enjoy the oldest basketball tournament in the State. They started last week and the best games are yet to come. Games start at 6:00 and play through 10:00, except for Saturday on championship night, games start at 7:30. You will be denying yourself a fun time if you dont come! ! So dont be a mosachist! Come and see. rVO SL v f played in the Valley iw V AKAPPV BUNCH o!C.C. Mr. Andrews said the applicants should be 16 years of age or older. Registration will take place at the North Ogden city offices, 505 East 2600 North.
