Duncan Wrestling sport is as oxciting as any sport Weber County Youth Soccer is one of the fastest growing sportd programs in the area. Fewer than 100 youth were participating in 1975, but in the 1978 playing season, over 1.100 boys and girls played on 72 teams in s Weber County. An anticipated players were expected to sign up this year, but officials were surprised when over 2,500 y ungsters signed on to play the sport. Part of the reason for the rapid growth is attributed to the Weber n Youth County Youth Soccer Associations philosophy that Everyone Plays, which guarantees that every participant plays a minimum of one half of every game. Additionally, there are no "try-out- ! Every youth who has the desire to play and registers will be assigned to a team. The teams are developed by age group and usually by neighborhood. Still the associations encourage more youth to sign up. They are also looking for volunteers for coaching and officiating. Another unique feature of the Weber County Youth Soccer Association is and that it is entirely and fees on only operates registration fund raising projects. None of the officials, coaches, or referees recieve pay. The fees that are collected are' used for the purchase of balls, nets,, Jerseys, patches, insurance for players and other operating expenses. The Registration fee is $7 per player plus an additional $7 if the player does not have the required regulation blue-whireversable league Jersey. Early registration is encouraged to assure placement of all the players and to the maximum extent possible the development of neighborhood teams. Those players registering for the first time mast bring proof of birthdate. The following is intended to answer some of the more commonly asked questions about the upcoming soccer season. Whal is Weber Cseaty Youth Soccer aad AY807 1.600-plu- Cottrells Have Similarities Weber High's Scott Cottrell and Tim Cottrell, formerly of Clearfield High make up quite a story in my personal coverage of sports. Both are, or at least have once been superb heavyweight wrestlers for their respective high school teams. My interest in wrestling grew tremendously in 1975 when Clearfield High went undefeated in dual meets and went on to claim the Region Two wrestling meet crown. I covered the team as a senior in school and as a sports editor for a weekly newspaper in that area, There were numerous stars on that team as I recall. excelled and eventually Doug Higley, the little took the state title at his weight. But the wrestler on that team that usually comes to my memory first is Tim Cottrell, who wrestled heavyweight. He wasnt 300 pounds and then again he didn't Just barely fit in the class, but he was superb. The Clearfield team found themselves in some tough matches at times. The middle weights were not quite as strong as the lighter and heavier ends and you could usually predict a strong start and an exciting finish. There must have been, and I try to recall honestly, at least four matches in which the victor would be decided on the very last match. Either Time was to do or not to do it. All four of those matches he won and helped give his team the victory. Needless to say, it was some very exciting wrestling. Now Ive found myself back in the thick of wrestling coverage again, and guess what, there's a striking similarity that it's almost unbelievable. Here are the Weber Warriors, having already claimed the Dual Meet Championship and looking as favorites to take the meet trophy in Bountiful. And what's really unique, is that . they have a Cottrell at heavyweight. Scott has twice now brought back vivid memories of the past when he won last minute matches against Skyview and Bountiful. Scotts victories helped give his team victories in both meets. Scott says he is a cousin to Tim, but claims he doesnt see his cousin too much. Cousins or not, the two grapplers make quite a pair and have done so much to increase the popularity of the sport among parents fans, and students. Good htcW to the both of you. Soccer-America- te Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is a organization headquartered in Los Angeles Calif. It is a national organization dedicated to promoting youth soccer and emphasising the Everyone Plays philosophy. Weber County Youth Soccer is Region 151 of AYSO. We are staffed entirely by non-pai- d volunteers from the community who enthusiastically support the program. As the program is not sponsored by either business or civic interests, the entire cost of the program is funded by registration fees and periodic fund raisers. The American non-prof- it Ilow is my 17 registration fee spent. . The following is a projected breakdown per player: 33.57 AYSO fee (includes liability insurance and an accident reimbursement plan), 31.40 practice and game balls, 3.60 patches for players, 3.45 field equipment-nets- , corner flags, etc., .98 other including printing, postage, coach manuals, forms, etc., etc. What about the 37 shirt fee? Shirts are issued to each player at a fee as close to our cost as possible. If a player has a league issued blue and white reversible jersey from last year, it fits and is in reasonably good condition, purchase of a new Jersey will not be necessary. Those needing a new Jersey and new signups will be required to purchase a Jersey which will be issued prior to the start of the season. How about shorts, shoes, socks, shlaguards, etc.? . All of the above can be purchased at local sporting goods stores. The standard short color is white. If a team wishes to standardize their socks, it should be coordinated uiru coach. Tennis shoes or the clealed, on shoes which piece sole, multi-sport- s re widely available are fine. Leather street shoes are not acceptable. Shin guards are not required but are strongly recommended for both nractice and games. What team will I be on? are put together by the league from registrations. Boys Teams teams are organized in two year age groups. Girls teams in three year age groups. Players are assigned according to school areas as much as is practically possible. New teams are formed every Spring. When will 1 be contacted? Coaches will be given their team rosters approx. March IS when practices will start. If you have not been contacted by the last week in March contact your Area Coordinator. When does the season start and when do we play? The first game of the season (weather permitting) is scheduled for March 31. A 10 game, 9 week season (excluding Easter Weekend) is planned ending on May 26. Although most games are played on Saturdays between 10 and 4, you will probably play two late afternoon games during the week. The Fall season will also consist of 10 games played in September and October. This registration covers both the Spring and Fall Seasons and it will not be necessary to register again in the Fall. The teams formed this Spring and their coaches will stay together for the Fall season. How much will I get to play? One of the main goals of this program is that "everyone plays. Teams are kept small (approx. IS players) and league rules require that every player at a game must play a of that game. minimum of one-hal- f Any deviation from this policy by a coach should be brought to the attention of your Area Coordinator. To further encourage the fun of playing and minimize intense competition, no standings are kept and no trophies awarded. Where will t practice and where will lames he played? Since teams are organized ac- cording to school areas, it is expected that your practices will be at a school or park reasonably close to your home. Most teams practice two or three times a week in the late afternoon for an hour to an hour and a half. Practice location and times are scheduled by the teams coach. Game fields are located throughout Weber County. Each field is sized for a particular age group. The location and time of games will be on a schedule which you will receive prior to the start of the season.
