William Griider writing in the - Wi burton Though the one side has the edge in rhetoric, the other would appear to have the edge in logic. As an example, lets look at just one pending regulatory program, involving the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). It's a classic case study. Late last year, OSHA published a proposed new regulation telling U.S. businesses how to determine what substances are cancer-causin- g agents (carcinogens) and how to protect workers from them. All well and good, you say? Well. no. First, scientific evidence shows that occupational exposure to chemicals is not a major cause of cancer. Second, the scientific community is not really sure how to go about determining whether a substance is carcinogenic. (Remember saccharin?) An October 19 report by the National Cancer Institute debunking OSHA's mythical suggestion that we are in the midst of a national cancer epidemic shows that with the exception of lung cancer, attributable largely ,to smoking and possible exposure to asbestos (a problem now under control), the cancer rate continues to hold steady. Other published figures show that while there has d a increase in the manufacture of synthetic chemicals since 1950, the cancer mortality rate during the same period of time has changed little. The two would seem to indicate that the need for OSHAs new broad brush , regulations is at least open to question. ly ten-fol- Utah State Highway Patrol Trooper G. There is ample evidence that we are not on the verge of running out. Doomsday forecasts for petroleum are not new. We here at Stahle Publications have appreciated the generous help from several individuals who have helped the Ben Lomond Beacon grow and become a community paper that could be a service to the people. There is still so much that can be done and it is my wish that even more people be involved in the building process. I personally appreciated the personal visits and phone calls of news tips and hints to make the paper better. But as people are thanked for the help theyve given in the to Beacons growth, I'd have to stop first and say thank-yo- u Mr. Howard Stahle, the owner and publisher of stahle Publications in Roy. He is a good reason why the Beacon even exists in the shadows of Ben Lomond peak. A lot of respect is due this individual. I came to Mr. Stahle early in 1974 and my appreciation for him has grown immensely since then. Twenty years ago, he started with practically nothing in hand and built the Sun Chronicle newspaper which is also printed by Stahle Publications. For years the paper suffered through good times and bad until today it has built itself into a the Sun Times being the sister newspaper to it. Today Stahle Publications is quite a business, it is estimated that xk million worth of business goes through the plant every year. The Magna Times, the Valley View News, the Park City Newspaper, the Sun Chronicle, the Sun Tiems, the Clearfield Courier, the Community Catalist, and the Ben Lomond Beacon are all Minted each week at the Roy plant. ,vi for restricted the 'Vj f restrictions upon production are responsible the energy problems with which the U.S. is currently 1973 the surplus Reliable evidence points, then, not to an oil shortage but to a massive surplus. In order to be that, more prople have got to start receiving the paper. A subscription drive in Plain City earlier in the year was a total success, thanks to the fine efforts of Bob Stewart, the principal at Plain City Elementary, and the PTA there. .. But to be truthful, there are still so many homes in North Ogden, Pleasant View and Harrisville that the paper should be going into. Only a part of the area we cover receives the paper. We are proud to announce, along with the PTA of Weber High, that a subscription drive in North ogden, Pleasant View, and Harrisville is soon to be started. Under the direction of Linda Spencer, this years president, the PTA plans to sell subscriptions and commense to build their budget with part of each subscription they sell. Now might be your chance to subscribe, seriously think about it. Again I want to say thanks to the people of this great area who have contributed to the success of this community newspaper in anyway. But in order for the Beacon to survive, and that goes for any newspaper, more people have to receive it. Utah has been a favorite place to pick on for people and we have declined to ratify it seven times and In the process has lost millions of dollars due to boycotts from "liberated women. In being a liberated woman it is suggested that you not use the introduction Miss or Mrs. Instead, you should use Ms. (pronounced miz) It isnt mandatory you call yourself Ms. Smith or Ms. anything because if youre truly liberated, you dont have to do anything, you dont even have to make sure your children have something to eat. It is much easier being a liberated woman. Also in being a liberated woman you should devote yourself to the ERA cause. This includes boycotting states that havent ratified the ERA, boycotting products that come from states that havent ratified the ERA, boycotting people that come from states that haven't ratified the ERA. If you cant find anything to boycott, you should work on your liberation. You should also support Gay movements because they support you. They feel your cause helps them You should also carry signs that say "Equal Rights for women at anybody cost Of course not all signs should say the same but it should all carry the same Pro-ER- A - meaning. We probably saw you throwing darts at your new President Carter Dirt Board when he fired one of your revered radical leaders from the National Women Advisory Board, (without giving names, she's Beils Absug) Do these sound like things a person would do to promote equal rights? We as Americans should know that the Equal Rights Ammendment is too vague in Its wording to do women any good. It states that (paraphrased) that rights shall not be abridged on account of sex. Many perverted and grotesque things are just waiting to happen if the ERA is ratified, although people think just the opposite. It will start with federally funded day care centers and within a few years, will lead to the fall of the nuclear family. ERA supporters think the ammendment will solve all their problems but In reality, their problems will just begin.
