Iluband) Recipe corrected BY CAROL SHAW Come on, you guys, I know my recipes are irresistable, but if you keep eating them before they get put into the paper, people will not be able to use them. An irate mob threatened to throw their dumplings through my windows, because they followed the directions printed in this column last week and only cooked them half enough. Have you rascals ever tried eating a dumpling that closely resembled soap that was left in a sink full of water about 4 hours? Take it from the concensus here, it is definitely BLECK! Dumplings, the size you get when you plop them in by tablespoonsful, need to be cooked 10 minutes uncovered and then 10 minutes covered. SERVE IMMEDIATELY. And dont stir, please. Now, please, all you angry dumpling sufferers, please forgive me and leave my poor windows alone. We rented a tiller and Ray spent one full Saturday tilling the garden and part of the flower beds. He then mixed fertilizer and sawdust in the soil and raked the dirt down to a nice, fine texture. He then had a terrific back ache and a foul disposition. Weve all been digging dandelions - watering - pruning. We havent eaten supper before 7:30 p.m. because we needed the light to work in the yard. After tilling, Ray and I went to a local nursery and purchased seeds, plants and seedlings. Just as we were leaving, we happened to mention our awful clay soil. The nrusery man advised that we mix gypsum into the soil. We had to wait to plant, again rent a tiller and mix the gypsum into the soil. Weve all been tired and unpleasant. Everyone has questioned the value of even bothering with a garden, but after removing twenty square feet of lawn, one doesnt feel that one has much choice. Last night, after hours of back breaking labor, Ray came in the house smirking - the first time he has smiled in two weeks. Im through. We have the garden planted. He then proceeded to draw a little diagrm showing me where the potatoes, string beans, peas, cucumbers, aspargus, rasberries, carrots, parsley, beets, zuchinni, corn and lettuce were planted. We felt proud and pleased with ourselves and our accomplishment of this mamouth task. The pioneers had nothing on us. Just prior to falling asleep, Ray blissfully crooned, Im glad we went ahead with the garden. Well enjoy it this summer. This morning when we awoke and looked out we discovered about four inches of snow!!! See what I mean? Someone has it in for us.
