Show Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Aug. 10, 1983 1 1 A ACT, SAT About ; Average By CHERYL ARCHIBALD Review Correspondent FARMINGTON Almost two out of three Davis County high schools graduates go on to institutions of higher learning, even though the state average of graduates who enter some type of college is 56 percent, according to Davis County School District figures. To determine who will be accepted into one of these colleges, students in their junior or senior years must take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or the American College Testing Program exam (ACT). The purpose of these achieve- - mentaptitude tests is to ' measure the abilities that a student has acquired in order to ap- praise how successful he will be in college. How accurate these tests are in that evaluation is a matter of debate. At one time, colleges low- ered the standards so that students needed only affirm that they had taken the exam. Now, students must score from 18 to 25 on the ACT test to be accepted by most western Universities. Universities in the East use the SAT test as the measure of enrollment in their schools, whereas the ACT test is used in Utah and most of the west. In Davis County, ACT test scores have ' averaged slightly less than state scores since 193, sometimes going a little above. The last year for which figures are available school year, was the 1981-8- 2 when Davis County junniors and seniors scored a percentage point below the state and national averages. Students who took the test scored higher in natural science than any other discipline. Math scores were their lowest. Recent National statistics showing that scores on these college entrance exams have been printed in reports such as the Gardner Report. But Davis High School Principal, Richard says that Utah schools have a pretty good average considering that 77 percent of graduating seniors in Utah took the 'ACT test compared to 42 perceiif across the country. He says that there are more kids on lower grade levels taking the test in Utah, which should bring the average test scores way down, comparing them to national scores. However, Utah was one percent above the national average on ACT tests. Utah has five competitive schools. According to Barrons Profiles of American Colleges, competiative schools are rated according to how many applied for admittance in ratio to how many are accepted. The University of Utah had 5,100 applications and 4,090 were accepted last year. The media ACT score accepted was 21. At Utah State, which is also a cometitive school, the median Excess Merchandise will be stacked outside during this Giant Sale!! SELLOUT OF EXCESS INVENTORY!
