STEELE Correspondent First day at school: Sometimes the mother cries; sometimes the sobs; occasionally both are on the verge of tears, as the kindergarten door swings open, and the child takes his first steps into the world of formal education. But the path between home learning and schoolwork need not be through a corridor. What the schools can do with a child depends largely upon what the parents have done with him at home.
