Show 38 Energy Guide March 2004 Miners' sacrifices create strong economic foundation for later generations: (Continued from page 2) In May 1945, a methane gas explosion erupted two miles inside the portal at the Utah Fuel Company mine in Sunny-side. The explosion resulted in the death of 23 workers. An electrical spark purportedly ignited methane gas inside the underground coal production facility. In January 1958, four coal miners died in an accident at Spring Canyon. A bounce of severe magnitude followed or was preceded by an explosion that sent tons of coal and rock crashing down upon the victims. Three miners were reportedly buried under the fall. The fourth underground worker managed to avoid being caught under the caving coal. But the victim was apparently killed after being thrown against mining equipment. Rescue efforts were hampered by recurring bounces and faulty air flow at the Spring Canyon coal production facility. In December 1983, an explosion at Carbon Fuel Company's mine in Hardscrabble Canyon northwest of Price killed nine men. The preliminary investigation into the fatal incident blamed methane gas and coal dust for the explosion at the Carbon Fuel coal mining operation. On Dec. 19, 1984, a fire erupted at Utah Power & Light Company's Wilberg mine in Emery County. According to recorded statements, two Emery Mining management employees along with 25 workers and a general maintenance foreman were attempting to set a world's record for tonnage produced in a period on a longwall operation when the fatal fire ignited inside the underground fa24-ho- cility. The blast killed nine men working in the 1 One worker managed to escape without serious injury, but 27 Wilberg employees remained trapped underground inside underground facility, commonly referred to as the 'Diamanti' mine.
