Show washington walton wold gets after tucker with a stick tucker and edmunds watching each other A bill to extend the A appropriation for the utah etc etc NEWS special correspondence washington feb 8 1887 another week and still the tucker edmunds or edmunds tucker bill you pa pays a your you r money and takes your choice is is not the law of the land in III my last letter I 1 mentioned that the conference committee had held two mcc mf ct ings tings but nothing of moment had bad traD transpired at either these were not regular meetings they were merely informal and attended by but two or three members in fact they could hardly be called meetings as they were casual gatherings of ef a chance nature when the subject came up I 1 heard beard the other day R N baskin was doing some tall cussing bussing cus sing because of the delay the bill once through the house be had bad supposed there would be no more difficulty but he be begins to feel that HIS TROUBLES ate are by no means over he walls wails out his bis laments in something like the following tone im d d well sick of this thing ive been around here for two years working with a all I 1 my power to get this thing through when it passed the house of course I 1 took it for granted that the fight was over and dere b ere I 1 am in as great doubt as ever everything unsettled and difficulties cropping out in the most unexpected places im gettin g so tired of the d thing I 1 feel fee I 1 like packing up my grip and clearing out and ot other ug er things he be said which the day might have quaked to listen to he damned congress he be damned the house be damned the senate land and be damned representatives and senators f singly siu ely ile he did everything which was loyal in a leaguer and which is TREASON IN A MORMON and notwithstanding it all the bill is not a law there may be an additional reason for this wail baskin and bennett and governor caleb west are known about the capitol as jack mormons cormons Mor mons this epithet is continually applied to them and particularly ticul arly to baskin who is better known than his oily com compatriot patriot 11 if there is one thing more ta than n another that baskin hates bates it is 18 the name jack mormon and there is little doubt that his gerves nerves must be unstrung to hear people whisper of him as he goes rast past there goes the jack mormon lobbyist louby 11 less than a year ago mr baskin in his bis speech before the house judiciary committee made this declaration 1 I think I 1 am one 0 of i the men in that country who has never had the imputation cask cast upon him of being a jack mot mon how have the mighty fallen think of it jack mormon baskin I 1 Now No wonder he cusses the whole thing THE conference COMMITTEE on the tucker tucke substitute has held two meetings the first was held on friday last it was of five hours duration or over and yet it adjourned without anything whatever being done tending to an agreement As near as I 1 can ascertain the whole time was consumed by edmunds and tucker the vermont senator occupying by long odds the greater part capling eap exp explaining aaning his views on the subject on saturday another meeting was held at this senator ingalls who had bad been absent from the first meet inar biz was pr present eisent this session lasted over three hours there are conj flicking reports as to what transpired tucker himself is authority for the statement that practically nothing was done there are other intimations that an agreement is likely and still others that it is very unlikely one report says the senate conferees are willing to make GREATER gruitza concessions than tile the house HOD se members ef the committee while another authority declares there was greater opposition pa on the part of the senate committee than had been expected and that the arguments were very spirited against the measure if anything intelligible can begot be bot out of this I 1 am willing the hopeb hope full correspondent of the tribune shall dig it out even ltd edmunds munds Is understood der stood to have said that they had hardly got at the matter yet but above these conflicting opinions is the declaration of representative tucker that practically nothing was done and I 1 believe he would have thrown out all tile the crumbs of comfort possible to the hungry ones who clamor i so io loudly for this measure to become a law I 1 do rot believe belleve any satisfactory position was reached and I 1 believe it safe to predict that the bill if it ever becomes a law will not be approved as it passed the house yet one member of the con conference ferenee committee is reported again and again to hive have said that he will fight for THE TUCKER BILL and for that alone without the crossing of il a t or the dotting dot tine of an f it looks to a person up a tree as t though on t tty republicans started out to steal a all I 1 ye e thunder chica anti mor mer mon legi legislation latiola gives hut that tucker thought lie he would purloin it for himself I 1 in apa particular jar and his party in general and d thai 1 he be 1 pas been foo foolish liall enough to suppose the republicans in general and mr edmunds in particular would submit to the stealing the mexican pension bill as you are already aware has passed there will be some money for a few mormons cormons Mor mons unless something is done to make them an exception to the purport of the bill this would bardln be a matter of surprise la in view of things past and pending 1 I send you the text of the bill to make a further appropriation for the penitentiary tent iary nothing has yet been done about it and it is yet a question it it will pass though I 1 am awake aware of no reason why it should not A BILL
