For almost 60 years, Americans have been donating blood for patients who need transfusion. Last year, approximately 12 million units of blood were provided to nearly 4 million patients suffering from cancer, leukemia, severe anemia, bone and joint problems, heart disease or trauma, and to patients hav- organ transplants. We at Castleview Hospital salute the many dedicated and faithful blood donors. Volunteer blood donors are needed-a- n estimated 8 million of them this year. While more than half of Americans are eligible to give blood, less than 5 percent actually donate. Although scientists are working to develop alternatives, there are no artificial substitutes. New techniques that allow some patients to donate their own blood and receive it, if needed, during or after surgery are helping to make more efficient use of each unit.
