Students place at history fair Adam Houser and Brandon Farish were the only state placers from Carbon County School District at Utahs 1995 history fair. Houser and Farish took third place in the junior division group presentation with their entry entitled the Witches of Salem Village. The students are sixth graders at Sally Mauro Elementary School in Helper and their teacher is Mike OShea. Hundreds of sixth through 1 2th graders from across the state competed with Utah, American and world history presentations based on the theme 'Conflict and Compromise in History. Participating students competed in four different categories: historical papers, projects, performances and media presentations. The state event was presented by the Utah History Fair and the department of history at Brigham Young University. The first and second place presentations at the state contest will move on to the national competition at the University of Maryland in June. Utahs economy continues to out peform the rest of the nation. With Utahs unemployment rate at its lowest since 1957 and job growth at its highest since 1978 and leading the nation in 1994, the states economy can only be described as booming. According to The Utah Taxrose for payer, TYYI the third straight year. Attracted to Utahs strong eco- nomy and growing job market, approximately 23,000 people moved to Utah in 1994, the largest number recorded in the past 40 years. Since 1991, nearly 80,000 people have jrelocated to Utah. The percent of goods jobs in Utah increased slightly for the second year to 20.1 percent in 1994. This is the first time since 1986 that the percent of goods producing jobs in Utah has risen above 20 percent. However, although these jobs typically provide higher wages, the average annual pay in Utah as a percent of the national average wage shows no sign of improvement. For a second straight year, Utahs average annual pay was only 84 percent of the national average. Bankruptcy filings in Utah continued to decline in 1994. Gart Bros.
