Have you ever decided on a Friday night to take a last minute weekend fishing trip but you didnt know where to go or what to use? Have you ever driven for several hours to your favorite fishing spot only to find Hie water was frozen and unsafe for fishing, or found that your fishing pond had been drained for irrigation purposes? Many anglers have exper- ienced these dilemmas. However, the Division of Wildlife Resources has the solution for your fishing woes! Each week the DWR updates its fishing hotline. Information is gathered 24-ho- ur from all field personnel and relayed to the hotline. This service has been available for several years and has told thousands of anglers whats hot and whats not. The phone number also provides information regarding best lures to use, size of fish being caught, when the water was recently stocked with fish, ice depths, and many more inside bits of information to make your fishing trip more enjoyable. If you are calling from outside the Salt Lake area and want fishing information about Utah or another state, at you can call toll-fre- e (275-3474- ). The Division of Wildlife Resources also uses this automated phone system to answer questions about hunting, license costs, appli- cation information and deadlines, upcoming hunter education classes, adopting a waterbody, birdline information, and many other areas to assist wildlife enthusiasts. Fishing success often depends on lure color By BRENT STETTLER DWR writer Fishing is a mysterious, quirky sport. One day, a special lure is the only thing that will catch fish. Another day, no matter what you use, you catch fish. Anglers often buy lures in certain colors they say will attract fish: chartreuse, shad colors, black, white they all catch fish. If the water is dark you would be better off using chartreuse or black because they will show up better, says Tom Pettengill, Sport Fish Coordinator for the Utah Division of SEE THAT HOME RUN, COACH? EIGHT MONTHS ON STRIKE HASNT AFFECTED MY Wildlife Resources. Action will be the biggest key to finding and catching fish, though. The better the look of the bait, the more annoying, or tempting, the more likely you are to catch fish. If the water is clear, youll likely do better with shad or perch imitations, says Pettengill The next time youre in the tackle shop, talk with the experts. Because of the cost of growing and planting larger fish, fewer fish can be stocked. Fewer fish translates to poor- er fishing. Over the years, the walleye grow and consume nore and larger trout. DWR recognizes the value of walleye, bass and pike as sport fish and manages some reservoirs for these species, notes Christopcrson. However, present walleye fisheries in Utah are underutilized. Because Utah is an arid state, DWR fisheries managers seek to maximize the fishing opportunity. In most cases, that means trout management. By and large, Utahns like trout fishing. The popularity of trout makes trout management the smart choice for most Utah waters. When fishermen second guess professional fisheries managers and conduct their own private fish stocking, they sacrifice millions of dollars which could be saved for other fisheries enhancement projects, and cost thousands of hours of prime recreation for fellow fishermen. posts regional angling report, conditions DWR 7-l- b. trout fishery and successfully es fish.
