Show 5 March 5, 2003 Gunnison Valley NevvsSalina Sun Restoring Fountain Green One Building at a Time This is part of an occasional series by the Sanpete County Travel and Heritage Council about the people, places and preservation efforts along U.S. Highway 89, the Heritage Highway. Fred Bums simply can't stand to see an old building go to waste. The Fountain Green resident can look at a dilapidated structure and see things that many others don't notice: superior craftsmanship, stencilled artwork, intricate wood carvings. "These buildings need to be saved," Bums says. "They are too beautiful and too important, they must be restored and made to look the way they once did." That is exactly what Bums is doing in the small Utah town of Fountain Green. He, along with numerous other volunteers, are restoring a nearly theater and dance hall. Burns hopes to use the building as a community center of sorts that will display the talents and wares of local artisans and craft makers. It is one of the many projects he will undertake as the head of the Fountain Green chapter for the Mormon Pioneer Heritage Area, which is part of the Utah Heritage Highway Alliance's preparation for ob ld taining national designation for and soul into this project," Bums US.
