New Horizons Crisis Center National crime statistics reveal that each year nearly 7 percent ol all homicide victims in thiscouniry are women who are killed hy their husbands or boyfriends. These percentages indicate that approximately 1,5(X) women annually, almost four for every day of each year, are murdered by men who claim to love them. Such numbers suggest that during the decade of the r980x as many as 5,(XX) women w ere slai n by their intimate partners. The fact that a woman is killed by her husband or boyfriend at least every six hours in thiscouniry is shocking. Perhaps more shocking isa 990 FBI report that stated that 30 percent of all women murdered in the United States were killed by their male partners. There is no way of measuring those who were tortured, mutilated, or injured by their mates during this same period. If so, such numbers would run well into the millions. The magnitude of spousal abuse within the United States is incomprehensible. Domestic violence researcher, Murray A. Straus reports that women in America nearly are physically abused by their mates annually, although many professionals, indicate the actual number may be five or ten million. Such a tremendous differential in statistical guesstimates suggests that an accurate estimate is probably perceptually impossible.
