USU Everyone is susceptible to telemarketing fraud. How ever, the elderly are often targeted more specifically for this type of crime because they are less likely to admit they have been swindled. According to Liz Gorham, Utah State Extension family resource management specialist, research, conducted by the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP), states that most older adults are not aware that telemarketing fraud is a crime. Only 2 percent of the older population thinks that telemarketing fraud exists. It is a crime that collects $40 billion annually. "As many as 60 percent of all cases involve the elderly, Gorham says. Fraudulent telemarketers play upon a persons loneliness, greed, chasing the rainbow, and fear of exposure. Most common scams targeting women are those offering large cash prizes requesting that they send some upfront money to cover taxes, shipping and handling, or a processing fee. "Men are most commonly targeted for scams involving investment percent). Inter-Regio- INVffifflONS ily member that they have been swindled. "Most elderly adults grew up in an era when those trying to help you were to be trusted." Gorham says. "They have a hard time hanging up on those who speak to them w ith kindness and promise big rewards for taking ad vantage of their offer, she says. Gorham says these are the warning signs fam ily members should look for if they suspect a family member is involved in a fraudulent telemarketing scheme: I) Large amounts of mail offering free prizes and investment opportunities 2) Frequent phone calls from strangers 3)Frequent stops or receipts from private courier firms 4) Secretive behavior in which the individual acts nervous when the phone rings. When family members do discover that their loved one has been swindled, they often cannot believe they could be so gullible, she says. They are angry and often inappropriately accuse the elderly person of misuse of funds. To be most effective in dealing with older adults involved in telemarketing fraud, speak in a quiet, private place, ask respectfully for information and be supportive, Gorham says. Those victimized experience anger and fear and lack control over the situation. They don't need someone accusing them of misuse of their own funds.
