Show r Page 2 Salina Sun October 15. 1997 Letter to the Editor Look at positives of Salina Dear Editor, Sometimes it is easier to see the negative than the positive. I think that there are many good things happening in the city right now. Most people are aware of some of them but others are known only to those closely involved in the operations of the city. There are still many areas that need improvement but I believe that our cemeteries, roads, and parks are in better shape than they have been for a long time. Individuals, church and community groups have done a tremendous favor to the city by their actions. Due to the hard work of volunteers, the Blackhawk Arena is able to book bigger, longer events as its reputation spreads. This in turn brings more people to support local businesses. A partnership was formed with the elementary school to improve the ball fields which were used mainly by city youth leagues. These are the types of things that can be accomplished with cooperation and an attitude of community spirit. Much needed improvements to our ancient and failing culinary water system will soon begin. This has been done with as little financial impact to the citizens of Salina as possible. A system is being built to purify sewer water so it can be legally run into the river. The system will eliminate any fines being levied against the city. The water project and sewer improvements along w ith an upcoming drainage study are a result of a master plan w Inch has been undertaken Because ofthis master plan, UDOT has now made a firm commitment to upgrade the state highway running through our city. A committee is in the process of organizing all zoning ordinances and changes since the 960s so we have a record of what Salina'sordinancesare. A future project is to do the same w ill) the city ordinances and codify them Asystem will be in place so that we can make those changes immediately and any interested party can use them. You can now access the world via the Internet at our local library. A comprehensive personnel policy will soon be adopted so city employees have direction as to their responsibilities and benefits We are working with the county econom ic development people in seeing what incan be done to bring dustry to our area. As I stated at the beginning. I feel that many improvements have been made and will continue to be made in our city. 1 sTed Hallows Dear Editor We are doing genealogy on our fam ly, are try ing to complete a descendant y chart on our Sarah Francis West and James Alexander I v te Our grandmother, Amy Louise Ivie Sorensen had a daughter f file B Sorensen bom in Scipio or Salina. Saliota by Jeannine Chisholm New Horizon's Volunteer Romantic love is supposed to be magic. We hear it in our songs, we see it in the movies, we read about it in books. Theres nothing the hero and heroine can do about it. 1 hey are helpless in the face of their love. No one else in the world could offer this kind of love. At the end of the story, we know they will live happily everafter. Sometimes to keep your notions of romantic love, you have to hide a lot from yourself. You are deeply in love with the idea of your loved one. You dont want that idea to be shaken by facts. He or she is wonderful. Youre the perfect couple, the abuse will stop soon. The magic of your love will endure forever. For some partners who put a low value upon themselves, this romantic high can cross over to addiction-a- nd this can be very dangerous. They become completely dependent on getting their "supply and cant get it from anyone else. Sometimes the abuser is also addicted. Batterers are even more dangerous when they are addicted to a partner. They may go to any lengths to keep their partner from leaving. Some have even killed rather than to lose their love." Forty-tw- o percent of all women who are murdered are killed by men who promised to love them. Nurturing love helps each person improve. It expands the world of each. It does not isolate either or both. Either person in such a relationship may sometimes get angry at the other but they would never abuse one another. Of course, nurturing love is usually romantic also, but there are limits. Nurturing love wants whats right for the other person. Romantic love just wants the other person. Loving an abusive partner makes it hard to leave, but not impossible. If the relationship is also addictive the most loving thing may be to separate, even if its temporary. Ifyou want to leave, youll need to give up certain romantic ideas. These are ideas such as HesShes the only one who can give me what I need. No one else will ever love me. Without him Ill just die! Ifyou need someone to help, a place to stay, or just someone to talk to, call New Horizons Crisis Center at 4 in Richfield, or outside the Richfield area. 896-929- Siam USPS 478-08- 0 Periodical postage paid in Salina, Utah.
