Smith UHP Public InformationEducation Air bags when combined w ith lap and shoulder bclts-ha- ve saved many lives and prevented many injuries in motorvehicle crashes. Recently there have been questions raised about tire safety of airbags. Tire facts, however, speak forthemselves. There have been more that 800,000 air bag deployments, saving more than 1,500 lives. To date, completed investigations of air bag crashes show that many of the airbag injuries were due to the driver sitting too close to the airbag module or passengers riding unbuckled or incorrectly secured. The latter include infants in child safety seats placed in tire front seat or small children incorrectly placed in a rear-faci- safety belt. In 1996 alone, air bags saved 600 lives. During tire same period, eight children died-- all of whom were incorrectly restrained or not restrained Foster parent training scheduled There will be a Structured Foster Parent Training held at the Central Utah Corrections Facility in Gunnison on Thursday, Aupst 21 and 28 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. This is for those who have applied to be foster parents as well as those already licensed in Structured Care. Many people who transport children in cars do not understand how airbags work. They fail to fully appreciate the threat passenger-sid- e airbags pose to young children and to realize why they must take steps to protect children up to 1 2 years of age. Thebottom line: children and airbags do not mix. Airbags could seriously injure or evenkill children w ho are in the front scat. In addition, short stature adults are also at risk when positioned too close to the airbag module, especially when unbuckled. There have been over 20,000 airbag deployments in which the driver was under five feet tall. In these cases, there have been nine fatalities, all of whom were positioned too close to the air bag or unbelted. Air bag risk is minimal if a driver can 2 inches or more away from sit tire steering wheel. Air bags are a supplemental restraint device which means simply that it is to work in conjunction with lap and shoulder belts to protect you in a vehicle crash. Also, children are safest in the back seat, with seat belts on properly, or in a properly installed child safety seat. 10-1- inappropriately high.
