Peterson, mathematics education coordinator at Brigham Young University. Several teachers in Sevier School District are enrolled in amath masters education program being taught by Peterson that will enable them to evenother teachers in the tually g district. Students who learn misconcepts of math must unlearn them before correct concepts can be learned Peterson told members of the Sevier School District Board ofEducation at a meeting held March 8 in the South Sevier High School. Its more effective to learn correct concepts first, he continued. A teacher well educated in math has more impact on student learning than reducing class size and adding technology. A well educated teacher is a long term investment that pays off considering that a masters de- gree will place the teacher higher on the salary scale, Peterson said. The math masters program will allow several district math teachers to teach at BYU and return to teach mathematics to other district teach- ers. The elementary grades are where correct math concepts are needed the most, continued Peterson. Im impressed with the abilities attitudes of the teachers in Sevier School District who have joined the 25-ye- ar service to qualify for the Utah State Retirement Plan. If an employee wants to purchase retirement I see no reason to put a roadblock in their path, said Jerold Johnson, board member. The purchase price is approximately $8,000 for each year. Individual State IRAs can be applied toward purchasing next years. Superintendent Thome agreed with SEA President Craig Mathie that it appears to be a winwin opportunity for teachers who may choose to retire. The early retirement deadline is March 15 and it will be extended so that a policy can be drafted for consid-eve- n eration by the board. The policy would enable teachers to take advantage of 30-ye- ar - Danielle Nielsen the retirement purchase option this Currently serving as Senior Class year.
