Thursday, October 13, 1994 ntermountain Health Care is given International Laboratory Award I Intermountain Health Care (IHC) Laboratory Services has been named the sole international recipient of the 1994 Quality Management Award. The award, the industrys highest honor for quality, is sponsored by the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA), which has more than 8,500 members worldwide. Locally, Sevier Valley Hospital is an IHC facility. The award is given annually to a laboratory determined to best utilize the tools of continuous quality improvement and total quality management processes, which then serves as an example for other laboratories. Past winners include Lukes Medical Center in Chicago, and Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. IHC will serve s a benchmark for quality for all other clinical laboratories, said Stan Schofield, president of CLMA, in a congratulatory letter. This is a distinct honor and a serious responsibility. IHC Laboratory Services coordinates the testing at IHCs 24 hospitals and clinics in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. While all hospitals have laboratories, certain IHC hospitals have developed into specialty centers forcer-tai-n types of testing. This has eliminated the need within the IHC system to duplicate expensive equipment for in central and southern Utah. improve service, clinical quality, and lower the costs of the tests they perform. Lab samples are sent several times daily to Utah Valley and Cottonwood hospitals for testing, with results then sent back to the hospitals and physician offices via computer. This coordination and sharing of services, as well as group purchasing oflaboratory equipment and supplies, resulted in a $1.1 million savings during 1993. Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo serves as a testing center for many rural hospitals and clinics out adding additional equipment, staff, or cost to the patient Another stellar example of the successful use of total quality management processes is the selection of a replacement laboratory computer system. Beginning in 1992, over 100 frontline computer users were involved in various teams to establish criteria and evaluate available systems. Their recommendations for a new computer system, along with input from all IHC Laboratory Services employees, were accepted and implemented throughout die IHC system.
