Among the most important is the decision to support the proposed amendment to Utahs Constitution to add guaranteed rights for victims of crime (Proposition 1). I strongly urge you to vote YES. The proposed Victims Rights Amendment will give victims and their families an absolute right to be notified of key stages of the criminal justice process, and the right to be heard BEFORE bail is set for the accused, the convicted criminal is sentenced, and the convicted criminal is paroled by the Board of Pardons. The proposed amendment also makes it lawful for police officers to testify instead of victims at prelimiThis protection is nary hearings. especially important for victims of ers (and the defense lawyers) before the trail has even begun. These rights for victims are long overdue. The proposed Constitutional Amendment is the work of Utahs Council on Victims and passed virtually unanimously through the Legislature last January. The Utah Attorney Generals Office lobbied hard for that passage: now it is the voters turn to place these critical protections in the Utah Constitution. The people of Utah deserve a criminal justice system that works; one that gives victims justice for the terrible harms inflicted ont hem and their families. A YES vote on the Victims Rights Amendment is a vote for the safety and integrity of all Utahns.
