Show Page , The Salina Sun, Thursday, May 12, 1994 Summer Theater will feature "Annie Get Your Gun" Pros and Cons of Old Ashman School Building debated at recent public meeting Three options for improving the Ashman Elementary School campus were presented by Sevier School District to between 80 and 100 people attending a public meeting Wednesday evening. Options presented by architect Dan Losee are: moving portable classroom units onto the campus; retrofitting the 90 year old pink building; or adding classrooms on to the southeast side of the existing building. Superintendent Brent Thorne stressed that the board and administration is still in a mode, the administration will take all the options and public comments into consideration in order to have a recfact-findi- ommendation for the school board to consider at its May 19meeting. Nothing decided by the board this spring has time to be implemented before the start of school in August. Whatever decision the board makes will be based on providing a safe schoolenvironmentfor students, Dr. Thome stated. Option One - Portable classrooms Since both the preschool and kin- dergarten are half-da- y programs, school officials have been studying the feasibility of putting the two programs together in an early childhood center on the Ashman campus, hosed in portable classrooms. The space now occupied by the preschool would be targeted for remodeling to serve other purposes should the school board choose Option Three. With 9800 square feet of usable space, the most for the dollar, according to Losee, this option would provide the least teacher space. Although it would be with appropriate utilities, he cautioned that it would be temporary, filling an immediate need until the district can bond for more construction. d, of education. If the old building is Sevier School District which is below the state average of 1.5 mills. Wilson presented a plan to finance the needed project which could possible included up to a one mil (.0002) tax increase. Part could be funded out of capital outlay money set aside for building and site improvement, with a state grant of one-tim- e money for new preschool construction which could be as much as a quarter of the total cost. One mil would be $15 a abandoned, Losee recommended boarding it up for the time being. Dont spend $ 105,000 to tear it down right away when somebody might find a use for it, he advised. Option Three - permanent addition to the main Ashman building Losee then presented several varieties of floor plans for an addition that would make use of the black-toppe- d area he called no mans land which surrounds the small annex nestled between the two wings of the main building, this annex, known as the pod because of its open classroom construction, is presently sued for second grade and special education classes. It is not equipped with toilet facilities. According to this plan, a string of classrooms would extend south from the present exit door located between the media center and the multipurpose room. Eight classrooms and two teaching stations would close in around the pod with 13,000 square feet of usable space, a little more than retrofitting the old building would yield, and the cost would be $550,000 to $575,000. To increase the usable space int hep resent building remodeling three large open classrooms in the west wing would be needed, turning them into six teaching stations. The early childhood center would be located int he addition. Accountant Patrick Wilson explained the financial constraints under which the districtcurrently works. Recent debt restructuring pushed the debt back to 2004, but prevents the board from bonding again for five years. There are 31 districts in the state whose tax rates are higher than home with a market value of $119,000. The truth in taxation process would be completed in August. Once the three options and the Six County White House Conference a Great Success Senior Citizens and Aging network personnel attended the Six County Area White House Conference in Loa, Utah on Tuesday, May 3, 1994. The purpose of the conference was to determine local needs and issues facing the elderly population for the next decade. There were 88 in attendance and many of those stated their concerns and recommendations in the areas of: Support for families and care givers of rural elderly, access to service for the rural elderly and National Health Care Reform and rural elderly. Ron Arnold Williams, Deputy Director for the Department of Human Services served as moderator for the conference and recorded the prioritized comments of the participants. The information from the conference will be sent to the National Commit Losee said this option, which would cost $455,000, would provide the district with a moveable set of rooms that could be used at another site later. . Option Two - retrofitting of the old Ashman building It has sentimental value and is important to the people of Richfield, Ashman principal Wil Jolley Howell of Ephraim and Beulah Rowley of Oasis. The Area Agency on Aging of the Six County Association of Governments sponsored the conference and the Wayne County Senior Citizens hosted die conference and offered a delicious meal to participants at the conclusion. If Congress has definitely rejected any point of view, it is the view that there is no problem with our current health care system.
